This is great!

How do you feel about exposing your dog to stress?

This young Weimaraner started a board and train recently. During the drop off, I informed his owner, he'd be living under some different rules at my house than what he'd been used to for the past few months of his life.

He would be subjected to some "healthy stress.”

Among other things, he would be sleeping in a crate at night, learning to walk nicely on a leash, and participate in proprioceptive exercises to build body awareness.

Essentially, he would be learning some problem solving skills and because of it, develop greater resilience.

The first day here he found himself stuck on the opposite side of a pole than the side I was on.

Can you guess what I did?

I did nothing. I stood there, not moving, not applying more pressure to the leash, not coochie-cooing him...I just waited.

It took him about 90 seconds of wiggling, and whining to figure out what to do to get himself free.

Once he did, he was darn proud of himself, prancing about for a few seconds and then we moved on and enjoyed a short game of fetch.

The stress was short lived. He learned how to relieve it and was proud of himself as he discovered his power to problem solve.

We do our dogs no favor by immediately bailing them out of every little problem or struggle they encounter.

So often I hear, "My dog doesn't like the crate,” or "My dog doesn't like to be brushed,” or "My dog won't potty while on leash.”

As a woman who has raised two (now grown) children, I could not have imagined saying to my kids dentist..."well, they don't like having their teeth brushed so we just gave up." 🤣

I have news for you, there are very few dogs that immediately enjoy their crate, or being brushed and bathed, or being restrained on a leash.

It's our job to teach them to tolerate the realities of life in the human world.

For most things the teaching recipe is simple:

A bit of skill, applied over time, mixed by a healthy dose of patient persistence.

If you don't have the skill, the time or the patience, you can pay people like me to do the foundation work for you. It is like having the dentist clean the kids teeth...but if you don't maintain what the professional did, it's not going to become good habits that serve for a lifetime.

The main thing to understand is that stress and learning will be part of life. There is no avoiding it. It is how we learn to work through it that makes the difference.

By taking time to teach your dog how to tolerate some stress and learn to problem solve, you set them up for increased confidence, improved manners and an overall healthier mindset.

Morning lessons with Remy! 😍 He is a wonderful lab who needed some obedience, confidence building, and some proprioception awareness. Sometimes, we have to teach proprioception awareness as the dog can seem clumsy at times and has a hard time with simple tasks like jumping into a vehicle. He mentally thinks it can't be done. The work we are providing is helping him to realize he can do it and how to work his body properly. 🐾🐕♥️

I got to meet Teddy today! 😍 This little Shih Tzu, Bichon mix is absolutely adorable but is having some issues with and being alone for the first time. We went over some changes and ways to help this little guy start to achieve some big goals in life. You got this, buddy! ❤️🐾

The wonderful, adorable Penny! 🥰 This sweet girl is attending private lessons here at the ranch. She loves everyone and has a heart of gold. We are working on improving her obedience and turning this happy girl into a therapy dog that she will thrive as.

Tana recently finished a two-week board and train program. This cutie needed a good off-leash recall as she will be moving to Montana one day! She did wonderfully and learned so much. I had a wonderful time working with her.❤️🗻🏔🐾

Nova is a young , recently rescued from the shelter. Once she relaxes, she is a sweet girl who is eager to learn. She has some struggles with strangers and is learning to trust slowly. We were able to provide a wonderful foundation of training for her and tons of information for the owners to continue to give her success in life. Way to go, Nova, you've got this! 👏 ❤️

Phoenix and Koa had a wonderful outing at our local Home Depot. We came across many distractions and worked through any minor cleanup needed. They did great! I am proud of them and their owner. Hard work takes time and consistency.

Phoenix recently stayed for a week of training. 😁 He is such a happy go lucky dude. He was tons of fun to train and get some cuddles from. He is working on becoming a therapy dog for Ohio Health, and he will bring so much love to those who need it! Way to go, buddy! ❤️

Jaxx spent two weeks learning and having tons of fun here at the ranch. We worked on no jumping. He learned all his basic obedience and off-leash e-collar. He was such a pleasure to have here! I can't wait to see him at his check in lesson.

These two cuties have been getting some private In-home lessons. They can have some reactivity on walks, and this evening, they did so good!!!! 😍 We took a long walk and came across many people with dogs, and they behaved so well!!! AHHHH! 🥰 Way to go! 👏🐕‍🦺

I got to meet this sweet little Italian Greyhound, Ducky, and her new whippet sibling Dot. Dot has shown to be a smarty pants as housebreaking is going wonderful! 🥳 I was able to provide some help easing the transition for ducky as having to share life with her new sister can be tricky at first. 😉 Soon enough, they'll be best buds! 😍 I can't wait to see them again.

Diggy stayed at the ranch for a 5 day puppy training. 🐶 This little guy did great on his housebreaking and learned that certain words can be "cool"! Listening to humans can be fun and worth it! 😉 💯❤️

Darby finished up with 6 In-home lessons this evening. Her owners worked really hard, and Darby now has a wonderful foundation.This foundation includes on-leash obedience, long-line work, and added distractions. We will be seeing more of her this summer for some off lead training! 🙌 Way to go, guys! ❤️
