Our dogs are always paying attention to us, even when we aren't fully focused on them. Dogs are incredibly perceptive and can sense even the smallest shifts in our behavior, body language, or tone of voice.

When we hesitate or show indecision, they capitalize on it. They learn quickly that if we are distracted or inconsistent, they can get away with behaviors that we may not want them to exhibit. This means that even when we think we’re not actively training or engaging with them, our dogs are always learning from our every action, or lack of it.

It’s important for us as dog owners to be fully present and intentional in our interactions with them. We need to be keenly aware of the smallest moments—like whether we let a “Sit” command slide when our dog doesn’t follow through or if we overlook a little misstep. These small moments of inattention or inconsistency accumulate over time and can lead to bigger behavioral issues down the road.

Being mindful of every interaction helps us build a stronger foundation of trust, respect, and understanding with our dogs.

Just like major life challenges, big issues with your dog don’t suddenly appear.

Your dog’s behavioral problems didn’t emerge out of nowhere. Small, seemingly insignificant actions or tolerances add up over time. Maybe it's allowing your dog to lounge on the couch without setting boundaries, or letting the leash pulls slide during walks.

These small, overlooked moments slowly build up until the behavior becomes a larger problem. The truth is, what we tolerate and accept, we unintentionally reinforce.

But we can control this by being more intentional in addressing the small behaviors before they grow into big challenges.
