Here are some ways we work on preventing/dealing with resource guarding! Ideally we don’t do ALL of them at a time, and we leave the dog alone to enjoy the resource as much as possible! However, there are some times when we do need to be able to remove a resource from our dog, so this is how we handle that! All of these strategies are MUCH less confrontational than just going up to the dog and taking the resource away.
Resource guarding is a really common issue in dogs due to their scavenging nature! So if your dog does struggle with resource guarding, it doesn’t mean they’re a bad dog!

Shout out to these private lesson clients who have been KILLING it! This is Grover, an 8 year old doodle who was previously unmanageable on walks - pulling/dragging his owners, and lunging and barking at dogs even from a great distance.
