Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical technique involving the specific placement of needles to assist the body in healing itself. While you have probably heard of humans getting the procedure, it also can work wonders for our furry family members! Correct needle placement stimulates nerves, increases blood flow & releases hormones and endorphins, which are the body’s natural anti-inflammatory and pain relieving substances. Acupuncture can be integrated with conventional prescription drugs and medical procedures to manage a variety of conditions. It can alleviate symptoms of chronic metabolic illness and is excellent for pain associated with degenerative joint disease or neurologic disorders. It can improve non-specific signs in cancer patients, including poor appetite, nausea & lethargy. Acupuncture may also lessen anxiety in pets with behavioral concerns.

A huge congratulations to Lisa for earning the Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Technician (CHPT®) certification! Per the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care, there are five requirements for program completion. By fulfilling these requirements, participants gain a holistic understanding of animal hospice and palliative care to be better equipped to provide compassionate and effective end-of-life care to animals and their loved ones. Our care team will have the ability to include Lisa in discussions surrounding palliative and hospice care in addition to end of life planning and decision making. This service is yet another way we strive to positively impact the lives of animals and their caregivers.

Meet Essie, a beautiful English Bulldog who visited us for a spay procedure, but also received procedures that will help her breathing. Breeds like Pugs, Frenchies, English Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers often snore and make noises while breathing, which can be signs of obstructive airway disease. Brachycephalic breeds often have elongated soft palates and stenotic nares (tight nostril openings), which inhibit normal air flow and breathing. Sometimes they can also have everted saccules, enlarged tonsils, and, in severe cases, laryngeal collapse. While Essie was under anesthesia for her laparoscopic spay, Dr. Adam Parson trimmed the soft palate and performed a tonsillectomy. These upper airway procedures greatly improve breathing capabilities, improve quality of life, and can prevent other conditions such as diaphragmatic hernias.
This summer, our entire office participated in canine/feline CPR training under the wonderful guidance of Dr. Denise Radkey, MedVet Columbus anesthesiologist, and registered veterinary technicians, Katie B. and Chloe A. In addition to classroom training, each team member was able to rotate through hands-on CPR instruction. The skills gained were invaluable and will keep us prepared in the event of an emergency in our hospital or out in the community. We are grateful for the high quality and accessible training our UAVH team received!
We had an absolutely fantastic time at our campout retreat and team-building day. We enjoyed so many laughs, caught some fish, floated around, played volleyball, and ended the night with an epic bonfire. It was a blast! Getting to spend time with our team and their families really brings us closer together and makes us appreciate each other even more. The love and respect that we feel for each other helps us to provide the best care possible to our patients! Thanks for letting us have this special day.

Join us in welcoming Dr. Marie Hereda to UAVH! Dr. Hereda received her undergraduate and veterinary degrees at The Ohio State University. Her professional interests include dentistry, animal behavior assessments, and celebrating the human-animal bond.
Dr. Hereda shared, “It’s so important that clients understand their options, so as a team, we can achieve the best outcome, the best life for their pet.”
Dr. Hereda recently welcomed a new puppy, Hayden, to her home, joining feline littermates Stanley & Stella. Outside the office, she is a certified Pilates instructor and enjoys cycling, karaoke, and live music concerts. Dr. Hereda is an immensely proud alumnus of The Ohio State University Marching Band, achieving a lifelong dream by playing baritone in M Row.

Have you heard of the Love Spay®? A Love Spay® is short for Laparoscopic OVariEctomy and is a less invasive, and therefore less painful, option for certain animals. In this procedure, we use our laparoscopic equipment to perform the surgery through two small incisions in the abdomen. By carefully cutting and cauterizing the ovarian ligament, we virtually eliminate bleeding and tension on the uterus. Laparoscopic spays cause less trauma to the body than traditional spays, reducing pain and shortening recovery time. Here are some tips as the Dog Days of Summer heat up: 🐾Restrict vigorous exercise in high temperatures, keep walks short and let your dog set their own pace (rather than pushing them into trotting or running). 🐾Do not shave down to the skin; ideally, dogs need one inch of fur protection to prevent sunburn. 🐾Keep your dogs off hot surfaces like asphalt, as this can result in burns on their paw pads. And with their body so close to the ground, they can heat up quickly. 🐾Keep fresh water available all the time! If your dog is kept outdoors, shade should also be provided. Many dogs also enjoy playing in water, so on hot days, take advantage of local dog parks that have ponds–or just get a wading pool or a sprinkler out for them. 🐾On excessively hot days, leave your dog at home. And, of course, never leave them in a hot parked car. #UAVH

Molly was our last patient of the day yesterday. Her dinner was five minutes late, which in Labrador time is five days late, so she went through mom’s purse and ate medications she should not have which resulted in a visit to us. Her final treatment was eating activated charcoal (mixed with food) to absorb any remaining toxins in the GI tract. Molly had no problem with this part of her treatment.
