Cold Weather Safety Tips for Pets!!

It’s not just your house and car that need winterization – your pet does, too! Here are a few tips to keep your animal companion healthy and happy through the cold, snowy months.

Keep up with grooming. While you don’t want to shave long-haired dogs, you do want to keep the coat and paws trimmed to minimize clinging ice balls, de-icing chemicals, and salt crystals. Don’t bathe too often, however; baths remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin.
Dry off after being outside. Remove ice, moisture, salt and chemicals from your pet with a towel after every walk or outdoor excursion. Pay special attention to paws and between toes. Try protecting your pet’s paws and pads with a thin coating of petroleum jelly before heading outside.
Beware antifreeze. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
More food and plenty of water. Pets burn extra energy trying to stay warm, so feeding your pet a bit more in winter can provide supplemental calories. Hydration is also extremely important in the cold months, and pets need several unfrozen sources of water.
Don’t leave pets in cars! Just as vehicles can quickly become ovens in summer, they can also become refrigerators in very cold weather, and pets could freeze to death inside.
Bring them indoors. When it’s too cold outside for you, it’s likely too cold for your pet as well.
If you have any further questions or need assistance preparing your pet for winter, give us a call at 614-888-2100

Piper came in to see Dr. Tribuzzo and Alison for her six month senior exam. Her mom had concerns about some masses that had gotten bigger. We performed a fine needle aspirate to investigate what the masses might be and found that one of them is concerning and should be removed. Thankfully we were able to get Piper scheduled for a mass removal right away! Remember to keep an eye on your pet for any new masses! 🔬

Get Fit With Your Pet!

Losing weight or getting in shape seems to be on just about every other person’s to-do list for the new year—and if it’s on yours, you may already have a great workout partner: your dog!

Just like humans, overweight pets are more likely to develop diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint injuries, and cancer. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight.

So now that you have the stats, here’s some tips to help you get fit together:

Measure your pet’s food to make sure you’re not overfeeding
Try interval walking/jogging with your dog instead of just a simple walk. You’ll both burn more calories and it makes the walk more interesting for your pet.
Play hide & seek with your dog. Put him in a “sit/stay”, hide somewhere in the house, then call your dog to you. Reward with small treats and praise when he finds you.
Spread meals out throughout the day (but make sure the total amount fed for the day is the correct amount)
Instead of a game of fetch, play “catch me” with your dog, rewarding him with the ball when he tags you.
Try agility! This obstacle-course-based activity is hugely fun for dogs and is quite a workout for their owners as well.
We can assist you in weight management for your pet and answer any questions you have about activity and exercise—just call us at 614-888-2100 to schedule an exam.

Fireworks are a common way to ring in the new year. Help your pets stay calm.

When you expect firework noise (whether in your community or over a televised event), give pets comfy places to hide, and play calming music or white noise to help distract them.

There are numerous options for treating noise aversion, and we can help you find the right one in time for the New Year’s festivities. Give us a call at 614-888-2100 to schedule an appointment or request a refill of your pet’s current Rx.
