Meet Bonnie!

Bonnie is a young adult kitty who got outside and went missing for two days. When she came back home, she was severely injured, unable to close her mouth due to a jaw fracture, which was suspected to be caused by a dog attack. She had multiple puncture wounds, and despite her infection and injuries, was in good spirits.

We hospitalized Bonnie and placed a feeding tube, since she was unable to eat on her own. Once her infection was managed, we needed to figure out how to stabilize her jaw fracture. Dr. Stacia consulted with a veterinary dentist, and learned about a procedure where buttons and suture are used to wire the jaw in the proper position and left in place to allow the bone to heal. It was decided that this was the perfect solution to her type of fracture, which allowed for stabilization while being minimally invasive, cost-effective, and allowing her wounds to continue to heal.

After almost 6 weeks, Bonnie’s buttons were removed, and she healed beautifully! As soon as her buttons and feeding tube were removed, she immediately ate a tube of Churu and got caught up on her grooming! She is now reunited with her family and doing great!

We love Bonnie Buttons and are so grateful for the opportunity to learn together and have a great outcome for her!

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, and we know that treating skin allergies is not one-size-fits-all. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, such as allergies, parasites, bacterial or fungal infections.

If you notice your pet excessively scratching, licking, biting or scooting, contact us so we can determine the cause and treatment plan – then give them a little scratch of love behind the ear! 😊

Sadly, we did not get the news from the neurologist we were hoping for, although we knew it was a possibility. Snoopy has 2 areas of spinal cord compression, one in his mid-spine, and one in his lower spine. He was given less than 5% chance of walking again, even with surgery. Because of the low chance of success, and the risk of complications, we agreed that it would not be in his best interest to proceed with surgery. So we will continue crate rest and basic PT for 5 more weeks, and then can proceed with more intense PT once we are certain his spine is stable enough to handle it. While PT may not return his hind leg function, it will help keep his front end and core strong, and there is a small chance he could gain the ability of spinal walking. (Spinal walking is when a dog with a spinal cord injury is able to walk, even if they have no feeling or awareness of their legs. It's a way for a dog's spinal cord to adapt to serious injuries by using a spinal cord reflex to allow walking).

We are so so grateful for your donations so far, and we will continue to raise money for his care, physical therapy, and eventually a wheelchair. We were also so fortunate today to receive a donated stroller!

If anyone is interested in adopting this silly boy when he is ready and can handle his special needs, please let me know!

Snoopy is my latest foster, and he’s stolen my heart. My years working at TopDog Health have made me a sucker for a paralyzed pet; it’s how I ended up with both Lady and Walter, and Snoopy is no exception.

Snoopy is a 1 year old French Bulldog, and has a whole lot of personality stuffed into one little body. Two weeks ago, Snoopy, paralyzed in his back legs, was dumped at Columbus Animal Control (Columbus, GA). His previous owners quite literally left him and ran. We have no idea how he became paralyzed, or how long he’d been that way. Fortunately, the good people at Animal Ark Rescue pulled him from Animal Control and brought him in to see me at Northside Animal Hospital. After 2 weeks of medical management with little change to his condition, I decided to take him home as a foster to rehab him. However, it’s become evident that without surgery, his chance of ever walking again is slim to none. While he’d be just as happy to only have two functional legs, he didn’t ask to be paralyzed, and he certainly didn’t ask to be abandoned by the people who were supposed to love and care for him. He deserves the best chance possible to hopefully walk again, especially at such a young age. And when all is said and done, he deserves a lifelong, loving home. Until then, we’ve welcomed this charming guy into our home to receive the love and care he needs.

The surgery Snoopy needs is not one we can do in general practice, so we need to call in some reinforcements. Snoopy has an appointment with the neurologist at Auburn University tomorrow morning. Following his consult, he will have an MRI to determine where his spinal lesions are, and if he’s a surgical candidate. The work up and surgery are expected to cost $5000-$7000. Any little bit helps toward this cost. I am totally smitten with him, and refuse to give up on him. Let’s see if together we can get this little guy on all fours again!

Snoopy deserves a second chance to walk again! 💔 Click the link in bio to help and share his story. 🙏
