One of our most exciting and fun group classes is coming up and it's our group Out & About!
In the Out & About class we work on a variety of different situations that you and your dog may come into contact with out in public. Some of the things we work on are loading and unloading from your car, walking on a loose leash, sit-stay and down-stay around heavy distractions, sitting politely for petting, remaining neutral to people and other dogs when necessary, and we also teach the leave it command.
This class is where you can really put your training to the test and also learn how to better proof your dog’s obedience. Each class is different so this is a class you can take over and over again and always continue to learn something new and improve.
Our next group Out & About class starts on Friday, May 3rd at 6pm! Sign-up today!

Week One of Maverick’s Lodge & Learn is coming to an end and he’s picking up on a lot of new skills. Maverick has been learning sit, down, stay, and heel and we can’t wait to see how well he does when he goes home!
Day Twelve is our last day of our Train & Play program. We don’t typically add on a new command at this point and just review all the commands that have already been taught.
Just because the Train & Play program is 12 days of training at Guardian K9 doesn’t mean your dog will be fully trained in 12 days. Training takes a lifetime of commitment and dedication.
We are so proud of the progress that Emmy Lu & Ollie have made and can’t wait to see them progress more. Their owners have done such a great job with them already.
Yesterday was Day Eleven of our Train & Play program where we had the dogs working on “touch” and coming when called.
We like to introduce touch not only to help with coming when called, but also as a way to get the dog to engage with us. Touch is very simple to teach your dog, simply hold a treat in your hand, present your hand to your dog and say “touch”. After a few repetitions with the treat in your hand you can now start to present your hand without the treat in it and say “touch”. Because your dog is used to getting treats from your hand they come over to investigate, this is when you will then reward them.
We start practicing coming when called once the dog has a good foundation of stay, like Emmy & Ollie here thanks to the work their owners are putting in at home. You want to call your dog to you from a stay only 20% of the time you practice stay with your dog.
Today is Day 10 of our Train & Play program. This means we’re working on walking in heel.
To work on walking in heel, have your dog come into heel position and then say “heel” and start walking. Make sure you have a few treats in your hand to guide them to stay next to you. Every few steps, stop and reward your dog. You can practice turning left, right, and about turns (turning all the way around). Practice at the beginning of your walk and end of your walk. You can also practice without taking your dog for a walk. The more you practice good leash walking manners, the better your dog will walk when you take them for a walk.
Day Nine we continued working on heel position. This time we added in having the dogs practice sit, down, stand, and stay. To practice this have your dog come into heel position and then lure them into the sit down and stand positions like you did when you first taught them. You can also work on stay the same way you did in the beginning.
Help us in wishing this paw-some chick a very happy 20th birthday today! We woof you so much, Carly! ❤️❤️❤️
Day 8 of Train and Play we are beginning to work on leash walking. Specifically we are introducing the heel position.
Heel position means your dog being beside you. In these clips we are working on what we call “recall to heel” or “coming into heel”. This is the first step on teaching your dog how to walk beside you. Heel position is also good for practicing greetings and interactions with other people.
Watching the video is the best example on how to do this, but explanation in words is take a treat in your hand on the side you want your dog to walk on, guide your dog to come beside you and then turn them around in a u-turn so that they end up parallel to you. Reward them only at the very end.
Happiest of birthdays to our very own Keeli!🥳🥳🥳
On behalf of all of us at GK9 and all our puppers, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉🎊We hope you had a day that's just as fabulous as you are! Here's to many MANY more years making amazing memories together. We love the heck out of you! ❤❤❤
Day 4 of Emmy Lu and Ollie’s Train & Play programs are focusing on duration.
Duration is how long your dog can maintain a sit or down position. Duration is the first step in teaching your dog a stay.
Simply grab some treats and have your dog sit or down. Continue to reward them to help them maintain the position. After you’ve given your dog a few treats say “okay” and release them. Then have them sit or down and do it again! Slowly try to increase the length of time your dog can stay in a sit or down position without you moving.
