ADVICE FROM A FARMER'S WIFE
- Whenever you return a borrowed pie pan, make sure it's got a warm pie in it.
- Invite lots of folks to supper. You can always add water to the soup.
- There's no such thing as a woman's work on a farm. There's just work.
- Make home a happy place for the children. Everybody returns to their happy place.
- Always keep a small light on in the kitchen window at night.
- If your man gets his truck stuck in the field, don't go in after him. Throw him a rope and pull him out with the tractor.
- It's a whole lot easier to get breakfast from a chicken than a pig.
- It's easy to clean an empty house, but hard to live in one.
- All children spill milk. Learn to smile and wipe it up.
Homemade's always better'n store bought.
- A tongue's like a knife. The sharper it is the deeper it cuts.
- A good neighbor always knows when to visit and when to leave.
- A city dog wants to run out the door, but a country dog stays on the porch 'cause he's not fenced-in.
- Always light birthday candles from the middle outward.
- Nothin' gets the frustrations out better'n splittn' wood.
- The longer dress hem, the more trusting the husband.
- Enjoy doing your children's laundry. Some day they'll be gone.
- You'll never catch a runnin' chicken but if you throw seed around the back door you'll have a skillet full by supper.
- Check your shoelaces before runnin' to help somebody.
- Visit old people who can't get out. Some day you'll be one.
- The softer you talk, the closer folks'll listen.
- The colder the outhouse, the warmer the bed.

After they got weighed, health checked, ENS and a nurse momma Cattie had enough but when she left they started playing and it was so cute I had to sn**ch some video! 🥰 When they calmed down a little they got some ESI, and of course we’ve started potty training as well as grooming/veterinary habituation.

(ENS = Early Neurological Stimulation. It introduces small stimuli and micro-stressors to help kickstart and boost continued neurological development. It makes their heart and adrenal systems stronger and helps foster a more healthy, balanced, intelligent and adaptable doggo in the end!
ESI = Early Scent Introduction where a new scent is introduced each day. Today is mustard seed! and
Puppy Culture is kind of like the dog version of Montessori methods and probably the most time/effort, which is all something extra I like to do since some of the puppers end up as Service Dogs. 🥰 (Can you tell animals are my passion yet?! 😂☺️)

Anyone local want to foster a baby opossum until a wildlife rehabber can take it? The dogs brought it inside, can’t find the mom but we can’t keep it around with young puppies in the house.

The puppies have arrived!! 9 healthy babies, 5 boys and 4 girls with a ton of blue (which blue is only the black genome with the added dilute genome, so that’s not a surprise)! Coats can clarify as they fully dry and throughout the first week or so but it looks like we have 2 blue with white marrkings, 2 blue brindle, 2 blue merle, 1 solid black (one single white toe), 1 reverse brindle and 1 blue harlequin.

Oh boy… It’s gonna be a NOISY spring this year.

Annual cicadas emerge every year and do their thing crawling up trees and poles, buzzing, breeding and dying. But every 13 and 17 years a different species and their brood emerge and add their voices to the annual’s spring buzz. Well, apparently this year is the first time since 1803 (221 years!) that both 13 and 17 year broods will emerge around the same time.

But they say not to kill them (unless you want to eat them, as they are a protein rich food) or spray pesticides as they are an important part of your ecosystem. Nesting birds and other wildlife with young will thrive because of these guys and even herbivorous species like deer, rabbits and tortoises will be snacking on them! Pesticides can poison the wildlife that infest them, so be careful with your chemicals.

When the cicadas die after mating and laying eggs, they also supply important nutrients to the trees their new nymphs will be feeding off of and usually a larger food-crop is observed the year following these emergences due to what they return to the soil. We will see the cicada wasps out patrolling them too, and although they look like threatening hellspawn the wasps are harmless unless directly threatened and they have their role to play.

It is advised to leave them be, but if too many die in one place the decay can smell so it is suggested to compost or bury any large quantities of dead cicadas wherever you want plants to thrive and produce next year. For me, I may wear earmuffs gardening but my chickens will be happy and my compost will be bolstered!

I’m terrible about advertising, but I figured it was definitely time to make it “Facebook Official” and say that Cattie-Brie is pregnant!! She is due around April 28th, and she’ll be getting an ultrasound on April 19th to see how many puppies and general development. 🥰

Cattie-Brie was bred with with Duke on February 25th, 2024. Both help their owners in daily life, have been tested for service traits, and are continuing the legacy of breeding and training Great Danes as Service Dogs for those in need. Duke, and Cattie’s mother Javelin naturally alert, helping chances of puppies having the same ability.

Photo update of the Constellation Litter! Puppies get p**p on each other here and there so need a bit of cleaning when that happens, but put them in the warm water and they just about go to sleep! Then today momma was acting a little sore in the b**b department and had a bit of puppy p**p on her so she was treated to a lavender epsom salt bubble bath! Cuz ya know, mommas need pampering too!! Followed by some soothing balm and yummy goats milk, then back at feeding the munchkins. 🥰

Videos in the comments since it won’t let me combine them with pictures!

For those who want E G G S (🥚🍳or🐣) that are organic, free range, much fresher, more nutritious and taste better than store bought stuff I have 10 dozen e g g s for eating and 3 dozen or so for hat.ching! These girls are getting back into the swing of spring!!

You can click the Book Now button to schedule a pick up, or you can comment or message me.

Hat.ching eggs are Easter Eggers, with the smaller ones carrying the frizzled gene!

Bags of organic chicken feed cost almost $30 per bag and every dollar taken in goes back to the ani.mals in food and enrichment!

Feel free to share this locally (Chattahoochee Valley area) to help a local homesteader out! 🙏

Well, out of the chicks I got last year two are brothers and as of this morning, finding their rooster voice to seranade the ladies. 🎶🐓 These boys are half Ameraucana, known for beautiful blue eggs and half Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, known for their gorgeous laced plumage. So this spring we will have fertilized Easter Egger eggs for those who want them. The chicks will grow into fascinating feather colors and patterns and pullets will grow to lay surprise colored eggs! They could be soft blue, jade green, cool white, olive green, soft brown, chocolate brown, *pink, *purple, and may even get speckles on them!

*pink and purple eggs have a brown or dark brown shell color, but the bloom coating the shell is thicker which makes the egg look salmon pink or plum purple in color!

Haaaaa if only eggs went for that much! 🎵We got bills to pay we got mouths to feed and ain’t nothin’ in this world for freeeee”🎵

What people might not know, is one single bag of feed has doubled in cost!! Plus with avian flu, if an egg or chicken farmer has a single bird test positive the farmer has to euthanize the entire flock to try and contain the spread to other birds and they can’t use that area for a minimum of 6-8 months. I’ve heard of some farms losing tens of thousands of birds, putting them out of business.

My girls (hens) have started molting for fall, so aren’t laying as often until everyone is done. If you want fresh 🪺eggs🍳 to eat from me you’d better scoop them up! Let me know how many cartons you’d like and we can work out where to meet/pick up!

Chickens can be so therapeutic. 🥰

So I’ve had picky pill takers before that would spit out pills or flat out refuse - including Javelin - but I have to say that I’ve never really had issues giving pills in beef lard (found in baking isle)! With cheese they want to chew it and most pills are nastier when chewed, peanut butter causes too much licking before swallowing which they taste it then as well, but lard is tasty to a dog/cat and slides right down the gullet with the pills, especially if they have more to lick off of the spoon afterwards! I use a baby spoon so scraping on the teeth doesn’t feel weird and this combination has worked for me for several years!

Gotta give momma vitamins to give the puppies as much if a boost in life as possible!

If you’ve ever wondered where your eggs come from, here you go! If you get eggs from me they are:
• Always Fresh: eggs older than 3 weeks are eaten by us or fed to our dogs, cat or back to chickens for good protein. (Store bought are generally around 8 weeks old)
• Organically Fed: They have organic layer feed crumbles always available in their coop (store bought eggs usually come from hens fed the cheapest GMO food possible to maximize profit)
•Free Range/Pasture Raised: Our 20 chickens have 1/2 an acre of native plants, beneficial herbs, poultry orchard mix, and during the growing season edible flowers, fruit and veggies that are never touched by chemicals. We often go into the backyard and eat food that I’m growing straight from the tree, vine or plant because nothing is ever sprayed on the plant that is not safe to eat. (Store bought eggs are usually from overcrowded hens in bare minimum conditions, sometimes forced to trample each other to get food or water)

My property is kept up with use of beneficial insects and beneficial nematodes, pruning of damaged or diseased plants, food grade diatomaceous earth, row covers, companion planting, and if needed organic, non toxic spray. I want my children, family, friends and animals to be able to eat anything I produce without worrying about anything other than maybe a bug, which my chickens eat most of! The chickens love to eat any mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks, grubs, cockroaches and other bugs they can get ahold of so I use them and beneficial insects instead of pesticides for everything I can.

If you ever get a really rich orange yolk, they’ve probably eaten red/orange foods like peppers, nasturtiums and/or marigolds! (Store bought eggs usually come from farms that do the minimum care requirements to keep their certifications. They throw male chicks into the grinder alive for kibble, and don’t treat hens past 3 years old much different. A hen’s primary laying years are 1-3 years old and a 3 year old hen at an egg farm is destined to be ground into kibble, feathers and all when their life span is normally up to 15 years)

Meet the hens that lay our eggs!
•Merryweather• Ameraucana (blue eggs)
•Fauna, Lumina, Glimmer, Wisp, Tizzywing, Prilla• Easter Egger (blue and green eggs)
•Nyxie and Vidia• Brahma (large brown eggs with a pink to plum bloom, sometimes speckled)
•Iridessa• Ayam Cemani (ivory eggs)
•Flora, Idalia and Maleficent• Wyandotte (light brown eggs)
•Chloe, Crysta & Rosetta• Black Copper Marans (dark brown eggs, sometimes speckled, some with a plum/purple bloom)
•Zarina• Polish (white eggs)
•Gliss• Mosaic (rounder cream eggs)
•Tinkerbelle• Olive Egger (olive green eggs)
•Peter Pan• Easter Egger rooster (no eggs, but watches over the girls and protects them)

🎙You know, I’ve been wanting Fae Forest to go from Menagerie to farm for years now as it has a much nicer ring to it, but I always thought a farm had to be rural. Well, I get tired of spelling out “Menagerie” or describing what a menagerie is so I looked up “what makes a farm a farm?” and since I sell excess eggs, chickens, puppies, fruit, veggies and herbs when we have more than we need, I suppose I fall under the description of farm!!! So even though I’m a suburban farm/homestead 😂 I’ll be changing Fae Forest Menagerie to Fae Forest Farm!!🏡

Someday I will have that acreage and a bigger retinue of plants and animals that I’ve always wanted… someday!!!

One reason of many I like having my own chickens. I *know* they have a good life, I can get feather or fur based snuggles anytime, I get to eat awesome tasting eggs that put store bought eggs to shame with much more nutrition, they eat weeds and bugs like mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and grubs, and I get to watch their chicken/dinosaur antics!! 🥰😋🍳

Did you know the hens that laid your “organic” eggs may have never set foot on bare earth or seen the light of day? An “organic” farm in Michigan keeps 1.6 million hens locked up three-per-square-foot in long, dark metal barns with no access to the outdoors, reports The Chicago […]

Hey all! Sorry for the lack of updates! ☺️
We have three pups currently available - Sora, Nimitz and
If you know anyone looking for great puppers to add to the family, send them my way!

Egg production has slowed down through the hotter weather (normal) and 3 of my hens (Chloe, Rosetta and Flora have now decided to go broody sitting on eggs, then Vidia and Maleficent are still caring for their chickies so all of them aren’t laying either while caring for eggs and bitties. 😆

I’m about to be flush with chicks spanning the next three weeks though, so that’ll be fun!! 🥰 Not sure which chicks I’ll keep until they get a tad older I think, but if anyone wants any non-developing eggs to eat or any hatching eggs to get little chickies from, let me know. 😍

🌿Organic chocolate mint anyone? 🤤

Only 💵1️⃣ per plant, with organic soil in an egg shell from my wonderful hens! Just dig a small hole, crush the shell a little and plant! Mint is so easy to grow it can invade the yard, so either keep it potted/contained or enjoy the smell of mint as you mow. 😂 Ants, mosquitoes, cockroaches and snakes dislike the strong mint scent, so it is a great natural deterrent! 🦋 Chocolate mint blooms in summer with white to lavender flower stalks that pollinators love!! 🐝

This is the only plant I’m selling right now. With puppies, kitten and chickies (Oh my! 😂) taking up all of my homesteading time I haven’t done too much annual growing this year. I fell through for gathering and selling mulberries (although the chickens and family loved them! 😋), my raspberries are still coming in so I ate the few fruits (Nope! Didn’t even share with my kids! 🤣), my peach, cherry, fig trees and grape vines are still maturing, and I’m revamping the garden area so only had a couple permaculture plantings or just enough planted for our family. Hopefully next year is more fruitful! Pun intended!
