Traditionally tick disease has been a concern mainly for our canine family members. However an emerging tick disease is reaching our area from the Southern states, that affects only cats and has now been found in Indiana. Known as Bobcat Fever, it is carried by a parasite Cytauxzoon felis within the tick, and can be fatal to cats. The natural host for this parasite is the Bobcat and it does not affect humans or dogs.
Nearby counties such as Monroe, Greene and Martin have already reported cases. This is prime tick season in Indiana and we recommend using a preventative for your cats to prevent any tick bites and attachment. Even indoor cats can be affected by ticks that can be carried in by humans or dogs. Regular checks and prompt removal from all in the household are also critical steps for prevention from any tick disease.
Call our doctors today if you have any questions about the best Tick control for your cat!

It is best to keep your dog inside as much as possible during these heat waves! Take your walks early morning or late evening, and always be cautious especially if your dog is elderly, overweight, extra furry, or a flat-faced breed. Keep plenty of water available and a cool spot indoors! If you know of outdoor pets, make sure they have shady resting areas and water!

Let's talk about F***l testing! We send our f***l samples to a veterinary exclusive lab for detailed examination. A f***l test checks for microscopic gastrointestinal parasites, which are worms such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms and also microscopic parasites such as Giardia or Coccidia. Some abnormal parasites like spirochetes or flagellates can also be detected. Warning signs for some infections and illnesses can be detected as well, such as an infection caused by bacteria like Salmonella, Shigella or E. coli, illnesses like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and fat malabsorption. Parasites not only cause intestinal disease in pets, some of them can also be infectious to humans (hookworms, roundworms, and Giardia).
During their first year of life, puppies and kittens should have several f***l parasite exams. Intestinal worms are very common at young ages and can cause more health problems, so early detection is important. In adult pets, f***l parasite testing should be performed every six months or annually. This is true even if your pet is on heartworm prevention or other parasite prevention.
Depending on the parasite, your pet’s treatment may include as little as one to two doses of dewormer or a prolonged course of oral medication. Each intestinal parasite has its own unique treatment requirements. 💩💩

May is Mental Health Month! Have you thought about what your pets do for you? The list of benefits is long! From reducing stress hormones to combating loneliness, the presence of a pet in one’s home can transform mental wellbeing in surprising and significant ways.
Dog ownership in particular leads to increased physical activity, which results in benefits for mental health. Pets often serve as social catalysts, facilitating human connections that might otherwise not occur.
The relationship between pet ownership and depression shows consistent positive effects across numerous scientific studies. The presence of a pet can have remarkable effects on symptoms of anxiety and emotional dysregulation. One of the most well-documented benefits of pet ownership is its impact on stress hormones, particularly cortisol. In an era frequently described as experiencing a “loneliness epidemic,” pets provide a powerful antidote to social isolation.
Hug that furry (or feathered) friend and say thanks!
