Patient recovery from Anesthesia:
Felony was extubated within 10 minutes of her surgery being complete. We do our best to give appropriate pain medications at the appropriate time so they feel super comfortable and do not hurt. Animals do have varying metabolisms (just like people) and some animals do take longer to completely wake up to walk out of surgery. In the video clip, Felony has been out of surgery for approximately 2 hours and a young dog from Animal Ark Rescue has been out of surgery for only 15 minutes. Both dogs received the same anesthetic and pain medication protocols, just one had a quicker recovery. This is entirely normal and why sometimes our clients are told their pets are out of surgery but not quite ready to go home yet, they are still waking up.
Anesthesia monitoring: what are we looking at?
This video shows our monitoring unit. In addition to monitoring an EKG and blood pressure, we are monitoring heart rates, respiration rates, temperature and oxygen saturation in the body. We use our unit with every surgical patient, but also have one of our amazing team members physically checking some of these vitals manually.
Clarence was brought to us by Animal Ark. He has a dislocated hip. He has some degenerative problems in the opposite leg and our team could not determine him to be a good candidate for surgery and really the whole recovery process. So rather than give up, Animal Ark pursued a wheel chair for Clarence and today documented his first trip with his fancy wheels. Pretty cool stuff!
