Pet-Safe Thanksgiving Foods to Share 🦃🍠

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and share, and that includes our pets! While some holiday dishes aren’t safe for pets, there are a few they can enjoy in moderation. Here’s a quick guide to pet-safe Thanksgiving treats:

🧡 Turkey (Plain, Cooked, and Boneless): A little lean, cooked turkey meat is a delicious, protein-packed treat. Just be sure it’s plain and free of skin, bones, and seasonings.
🧡 Sweet Potatoes: Cooked and plain sweet potatoes (without added butter, sugar, or marshmallows) make a great, nutrient-rich snack.
🧡 Green Beans: Fresh or steamed green beans are a crunchy, healthy snack for pets—no seasoning, please!
🧡 Pumpkin: Plain, canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) is high in fiber and great for digestion.

Remember to offer these in small amounts so you don’t upset your pet’s stomach. If you’re ever in doubt about what’s safe, reach out to our team—we’re here to help! 614-451-4772

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Northwest Animal Hospital! 🐾🍂

If your pet isn't already vaccinated for Leptospirosis, reach out today!

🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.
Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.
You can find the full update in the Nov/Dec issue of JAAHA, or check out the full 2022 Canine Vaccination Guidelines here: aaha.org/canine-vaccinations

Happy Halloween? For Pets, It Can Be With A Little Practice

For dogs who do join trick or treaters, here are some safety tips:

Keep your dog on a leash. A retractable leash is not recommended because trick or treaters can trip over the extended leash, especially in the dark.
If your dog shows any signs of fear, anxiety, or stress, trick or treating may not be your dog’s bag. Barking (when your dog typically might not bark), lunging on the leash, a tucked tail, and persistent yawning are all among the signs to watch for. Much more can be found in the book, “From Fearful to Fear Free: A Positive Program to Free Your Dog from Anxiety, Fears and Phobias,” by Dr. Marty Becker, Dr. Lisa Radosta, Dr. Walliani Sung, and Mikkel Becker.
Check the bag. These days, people even offer dogs trick or treat goodies. Remember a 20-pound dog should only have so many biscuits, just as an 8-year-old child should have only so much candy. If you have any doubts about a treat, toss it.
