We saw Cooper for bloody diarrhea after passing a sock (his favorite). We took abdominal radiographs and found another foreign body hiding in his abdomen. We facilitated transfer to and Dr. Joanna Pogue was able to scope it out! Swipe to see the culprit!

Cooper was the best boy ever and we are so happy he is at home resting now!

Have you heard of the Rule of Three? Imagine having your entire world uprooted, and you are now in the hands of a stranger. Not only are the people around you new, but the whole environment lacks the comfort of whatever “home” you had before. For some of our dogs, “home” has been a kennel at the shelter. For others, “home” might have been a family full of kids and other dogs and a big yard they could call their own.

Wherever you choose to get your next family member, we hope that you’ll keep the rule of three in mind. Even though you’ve been preparing for a new dog and made sure you adopted just what you wanted, that dog did not get to choose. They need time to learn you, and a fair chance at making your house a home. So many dogs are returned to us just hours after being adopted, and the descriptions are often completely different than the dog we’ve had in our foster homes. Because that’s not really who they are. Please be patient and understanding as they learn what is expected of them, and how to love again.

Lucifer presented with an aural hematoma. An aural hematoma is an accumulation of blood in the pinna (ear flap). This typically occurs from excessive head shaking, most commonly due to an ear infection.

Dr. Harney drained the fluid from Lucifer’s ear and started him on topical treatment for his ear infection. Sometimes the fluid can quickly re-accumulate and surgical repair is needed for definitive cure so it’s important to recheck as needed.

Sharing a classic case of “Old Dog Vestibular Disease” (Idiopathic vestibular disease) 🩺

She presented with a head tilt, incoordination and falling over, and you can see her lateral eye movements (nystagmus) in the first video. These are all disturbances in the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation.

Old dog vestibular disease is a syndrome involving an acute onset of vestibular signs, dizziness and sometimes vomiting. Treatment is usually supportive in nature and this condition will resolve on its own within 1-2 weeks.

Swipe if you like a good abscess! Bruce presented with a high fever, swelling of his left front leg and had a large abscess in his left armpit area. We sedated him to lance, drain, and flush the wound. He woke up next to his sweet nurse, Jaclyn, and felt better immediately!

This adorable little man (Clementine 😍) wanted to see why his ears were so itchy! Swipe to see what ear mites look like under the microscope!

Ear mites (Otodectes) are common in young, outdoor cats and dogs. They are very contagious to other cats and dogs with close contact. Ear mites burrow into the ear canals and cause extreme irritation and itch. Luckily, they are easy to treat!
