Dr. Jamie A. Berning is a board-certified veterinary dentist. She graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. After graduation she worked in small animal general practice for a few years. Having been oriented towards pigs (yes, pigs!) most of vet school, working with dogs and cats was a change of pace. Shorty into her career she realized her passion for veterinary dentistry and began shadowing a local veterinary dentist on days off, and was eventually asked to start a formal dental training program. She began her alternate pathway residency while working in private practice in 2013. Quickly realizing the difficulties associated with performing advanced dental procedures as an associate veterinarian, she left general practice and began traveling around the country to spend time at various veterinary dental referral facilities. This allowed Dr. Berning to gain knowledge of advanced dentistry, network within the very small dental community, and get a feel for the vast differences between veterinary dentists! Dr. Berning began working at dental referral facilities in Michigan and had the great honor of working alongside one of the original founding members of the AVDC for multiple years, as well as other incredible veterinary dentists. Throughout her training she came to the realization that many veterinarians lack the education necessary for completing even the most basic of dental procedures. She has helped teach veterinary students at The Ohio State University and Michigan State University. Additionally, Dr. Berning is a RACE provider, and gives lectures for veterinarians and technicians. She teaches in-clinic trainings for radiograph positioning, radiograph interpretation, extraction techniques, and much much more! She loves teaching and realizes the immense impact she is able to have on pets everywhere by helping to educate the veterinary teams working with those animals! Dr. Berning is passionate about dentistry. It's safe to say it runs in her blood - her dad and brother are human dentists! Dr. Berning spent a lot of time working with human dental specialists, including oral surgeons, periodontists, and radiologists, and has worked on multiple publications with human dental specialists! In 2019 she became the only board-certified (non-species specific) veterinary dentist in Ohio and hired an incredible registered veterinary technician, Jill Bates. Thank you for reading.
