๐ŸŒฟ Understanding Lyme Disease in Pets ๐Ÿพ

As we enjoy the outdoors with our furry friends this summer, it's essential to be aware of Lyme disease. This tick-borne illness can affect dogs and cats, causing symptoms like lethargy, joint pain, and fever.

According to the Companion Comparison Animal Council, between January 1st, 2024, and June 30th, 2024, there have been 18,410 positive Lyme disease cases in Ohio alone.

๐Ÿ“ŒHere's what you should know:๐Ÿ“Œ
- Prevention: Use tick preventatives and check your pet regularly for ticks, especially after outdoor adventures. Avoiding tall grasses and wooded areas can also reduce the risk.
- Symptoms: Watch for lameness, swollen joints, fever, and loss of appetite. Sometimes, symptoms can appear weeks after the initial tick bite.
- Treatment: Early detection is key. If you suspect Lyme disease, visit us for prompt veterinary care. Antibiotics are effective, but timely intervention is crucial to prevent complications.
- Environment Management: Keep your yard tidy by mowing grass regularly and removing leaf litter, which can harbor ticks.
- Vaccination: Ask your veterinarian about Lyme disease vaccines available for dogs, which can offer an extra layer of protection.

๐Ÿ“Additional Facts:๐Ÿ“
- Transmission: Lyme disease is primarily transmitted by the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis). The tick must be attached for 36-48 hours to transmit the disease.
- Geographical Spread: While Lyme disease is more prevalent in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States, it has been reported in all 50 states.
- Human Risk: Lyme disease can also affect humans, so protecting your pets can indirectly protect you and your family from exposure.
- Diagnosis: Veterinarians typically diagnose Lyme disease through a combination of physical examination, history of tick exposure, and blood tests that detect antibodies against the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi.
- Co-infections: Ticks that carry Lyme disease may also carry other pathogens, leading to co-infections such as anaplasmosis or ehrlichiosis, which can complicate the diagnosis and treatment.

Let's keep our pets safe and healthy! Have you encountered Lyme disease with your pet? Share your experiences and tips for prevention. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽ†Attention Pet Owners! ๐ŸŽ†

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, itโ€™s important to remember that while we enjoy the fireworks, our pets might not. Many animals experience significant stress and anxiety from the loud noises and bright flashes.

If your pet is frightened by fireworks, now is the time to prepare. Visit our office to discuss options for keeping your furry friend calm during the celebrations or to refill a prescription. There are various solutions available, from calming treats and special clothing to prescribed medications that can make a huge difference in your pet's comfort.

Here are a few steps you can take to help your pet during fireworks:

๐ŸŽ† **Consult Your Vet:** Discuss medications or calming solutions that are safe and effective for your pet.
๐ŸŽ† **Create a Safe Space:** Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat from the noise.
๐ŸŽ† **Use Background Noise:** Turn on the TV or play music to help drown out the sound of fireworks.
๐ŸŽ† **Stay Calm:** Pets can sense your anxiety, so try to remain as calm and relaxed as possible.
๐ŸŽ† **Keep Them Indoors:** Ensure your pet is inside the house and all doors and windows are securely closed.

By taking these steps and planning ahead, you can help ensure your pet has a stress-free Fourth of July. Letโ€™s make this holiday safe and enjoyable for everyone, including our beloved pets!
