📘Recipe from The Forever Dog LIFE: Best Bone Broth
3 lbs any bones (chicken, marrow, knuckle/joint bones, etc)
8-10 cups filtered water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Optional add-ins: for added collagen add a piece of raw backstrap tendon, chicken or duck feet
1. Place bones in slow cooker. Add enough filtered water to just cover contents by 1/2 to 1 inch. Add apple cider vinegar.
2. Cook on medium-high heat for one hour, then reduce to low. Keep a very gentle boil where the surface of the liquid is moving with only occasional small bubbles appearing. (If cooking low and slow, there should be minimal evaporation. If liquid is evaporating, add more water and decrease cooking temperature.)
3. Let cool, discard bones, and strain through fine mesh strainer into clean glass containers (to remove small, splintered bones).
4. Skim and discard fat before freezing or serving.
⏲️ Slow cooker cookies:
- Chicken bones: 24 hours
- Dense bones (beef, bison, lamb): 48 hours
🥄Feed your pet one to two ounces to start. Big batches or leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days or the freezer for three months (if you choose, you can portion into ice cube trays).
