Happy Birthday to Dr. La'Shardae Scott, DSW, MSW, CHES! Dr. Scott is a passionate leader, advocate, and change-maker and serves as our Region 1 (Toledo Area) Co-Director. As President and CEO of the Scott Center for Observation, Treatment, and Transition, she leads critical initiatives addressing infant mortality, mental health, and the transition of sickle cell patients from pediatric to adult care. Her work has secured vital funding, fostered partnerships with the CDC and hospitals across Ohio, and resulted in lasting improvements in care for individuals living with sickle cell disease. Her commitment is not only professional but personal—as the proud mother of two children living with sickle cell disease, she brings heart, strength, and purpose to every role she takes on. We are grateful for Dr. Scott’s tireless leadership and inspired by all that she brings to the social work profession and to communities across Ohio. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead!

Happy Birthday to Sadie! We are thrilled to celebrate Sadie, our BSW student representative and a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati who combined social work, psychology, and art therapy in her studies. Sadie is a passionate advocate for low-income families and is committed to building a future where healing and support are accessible to all. During her time at UC, she served as a program lead at the Boys and Girls Club, supervised the First Year Experience program, and was an active leader in the Children’s Miracle Network’s Dance Marathon. Her dedication, creativity, and compassion have already made a meaningful impact—and we can’t wait to see what she does next as she continues toward her goals of earning master’s degrees in both social work and art therapy. Wishing you a joyful year ahead, Sadie!

The 2026-27 state budget cuts funding for services for everyday Ohioans and instead provides tax breaks to the wealthy, as well as $600 million for the Cleveland Browns. While the budget contains many harmful provisions, including underfunding public schools and libraries, we are focusing on the following issues due to their direct impact on social workers and the services we provide.

The budget:
- Threatens Medicaid expansion coverage by cutting state funding if the federal match falls below 90%, putting roughly 770,000 Ohioans at risk of losing healthcare. This will also severely impact the social work force.
- Defunds certain homeless shelters that support transgender youth
- Bans Medicaid coverage of gender-affirming mental health care for all ages

Call Governor DeWine at (614) 644-4357 to ask him to veto these parts of the budget!

Check out our partners, Equality Ohio, Policy Matters Ohio, and Honesty for Ohio Education for more information about their focus areas of the budget.

Through hands-on activities and group discussions, participants will explore how to apply best practices across micro, mezzo, and macro levels using a trauma-informed, culturally responsive lens. While the chaos of the world can make us feel stuck or bring about feelings of despair, we can seek tools to become part of the solution. We still have open slots for our next Navigating New Laws training. While this training focuses on Ohio HB 68, it provides resources and tools that can be used in a variety of populations and situations as we talk about personal risk tolerance, documentation practices, and ethics. This training is approved for 6 ethics hours for social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, chemical dependency, and psychology licenses. This training is offered free of charge, we just request a $10 deposit to hold your seat that is refunded upon attendance. Register at naswoh.org/event/NNLVirtual
