🚨 SB 1 is moving fast 🚨

Yesterday NASW Ohio Practice Associate Liam Strausbaugh testified against SB 1. This bill threatens academic freedom, limits diversity, equity, and inclusion, and puts social work education at risk. If passed, it could potentially lead to social work programs losing accreditation—preventing graduates from getting licensed in Ohio. We are working hard to secure an amendment to carve out coursework required for accreditation, and we are hopeful that solutions can be found to protect social work students and programs. But we need everyone to take action now.

The bill has now been voted out of the Senate Higher Education Committee and will go to the full Senate for a vote, perhaps later today.

📞 Contact your Senator and Representative today and tell them to vote NO on SB 1: https://www.votervoice.net/NASWOH/Campaigns/121299/Respond. It only takes a few minutes to send through this link.

In times of legal immorality, people have risked their freedom in order to fight for the rights of others are protected.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and civil rights activist who had a seismic impact on race relations in the United States, beginning in the mid-1950s. Led by his religious convictions and philosophy of nonviolent protests, King became one of the most prominent figures of the Civil Rights Movement. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among several other honors.

King was arrested 29 times throughout his activist journey. Even when King was in Birmingham Jail, he showed determination to share why the fight for civil rights was so necessary. He wasn’t just a leader; his arrests were a big part of his fight for equal rights and challenging the current system of discrimination. Through his leadership and bravery, the Civil Rights Movement was ultimately successful in taking steps towards equality for Black Americans, including the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at age 39, and continues to be remembered as one of the most influential and inspirational Black leaders in history.

Ohio Senate Bill 1, the new version of the Higher Education Destruction Act (SB 83 from the 135th OGA), is moving, with a hearing in the Senate Higher Education Committee on February 11th.

This bill falsely claims to “fix” higher education by limiting diversity, equity, and inclusion, hindering free speech, gutting workers ' rights, and much more. If passed, the restrictions on diversity, equity, and inclusion content could result in Ohio social work programs losing CSWE accreditation and thus preventing their graduates from getting licensed!

Action Alert: Contact your members of Congress today to ask them to protect their constituents and let the White House know that it is Congress alone who has the authority to make federal appropriations and that any freeze on federal grants, loans and financial assistance will have immediate and harmful impacts in our community. : https://www.votervoice.net/NASW/Campaigns/121092/Respond
