We had a wonderful turnout at last night’s BIPOC Holding Space — nearly 20 social workers came together for connection, validation, and encouragement. This statewide support group is for BIPOC social workers to gather in community during these challenging times. We’re proud to partner this year with the National Association of Black Social Workers Columbus Chapter to host these events, with some gatherings in-person and others virtual so social workers from across Ohio can join.

Our next BIPOC Holding Space events are Thursday, January 22, 2026 – Virtual via Zoom and Thursday, March 26, 2026 – In person at The Wine Bistro, Upper Arlington, OH. All are welcome, NASW members and non-members alike. Appetizers are on us! Our other Holding Space events are at naswoh.org/holdingspace

As social workers, we give everything to support our clients — but in times when access to care is shrinking and systems are shifting, we also need advocates for us. NASW is that advocate, standing beside you to ensure you can keep doing this critical work safely, ethically, and effectively.

During this shutdown, social workers are again being forced to do the government’s job- holding communities together while elected officials fail to do theirs. Families are going hungry, rent is due, and parents are desperate for formula- yet the government’s dysfunction has cut off the very programs that keep people alive.

Social workers are on the frontlines helping families find food, housing, and stability, but we’re not immune- many of us depend on the same programs that keep our communities afloat. It is outrageous that the government we serve refuses to serve us in return.

That’s why we’re demanding immediate passage of HB 502, so Ohio can use its rainy day fund to keep SNAP, TANF, and WIC running until federal funding resumes. Hunger doesn’t pause when the government shuts down. It’s time for Ohio’s leaders to prove they understand that.

Take action nationally and in Ohio:
Sign NASW’s petition urging the President, Agriculture Secretary, and Congressional leaders to protect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): https://tinyurl.com/4uyrf4ey

Contact your state legislators and urge them to support and swiftly pass HB 502:

💪 You don’t have to take on oppressive systems alone.

As NASW Ohio Region 3 Co-Director Steph Ash reminds us, now more than ever it’s essential to be in community with other social workers. Together, we can harness our collective energy, create change, and cause some good trouble.

🎥 Hear Steph’s message about why solidarity matters — and how joining NASW means you’re never fighting for justice by yourself.

Social workers know how to build community—whether it’s around a bonfire or a trunk full of candy!

Last week NASW Ohio’s Region 2 and Region 3 members gathered for a cozy Bonfire & S’mores Night at the Cleveland Metroparks and Region 5 joined Open Door Columbus for their annual Trunk or Treat celebration. Both events brought together social workers, families, and community members to connect, laugh, and celebrate the season.

Thank you to everyone who joined, volunteered, and helped make these fall gatherings such a success.

NASW Ohio stands firmly with social workers organizing for fair wages, safe working conditions, and equitable treatment in their workplaces. Unionization is social justice in action—social workers using their collective voice to advance dignity and fairness for themselves and those they serve.

At Equitas Health, members of Equitas Health Workers United are holding an informational picket on Monday, October 27, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. in Columbus to demand fair pay and respect on the job. Those interested in joining in solidarity can email Danielle Smith at [email protected]
for details.

At Bellefaire JCB in Northeast Ohio, social workers and allied staff are organizing to defend their right to union representation and fair working conditions after management withdrew recognition of their long-standing union. Stand with Bellefaire workers by signing and sharing this petition: Take Action for Bellefaire Workers: https://secure.everyaction.com/SEEMWzmXJEOSBQi36UVMtA2. For more information and to join upcoming pickets, contact Silas Ortiz at [email protected]

Two upcoming NASW Ohio spaces are here this week to help you care for yourself and your community.

Join the Grief and Collective Care Group on October 27 from 12–1 PM (virtual) — a supportive consultation space for social workers to process grief, reflect, and reconnect with purpose.

Then, come together for BIPOC Holding Space on October 30 from 6–7:30 PM in Whitehall, co-hosted with NABSW Columbus — a restorative evening for connection and solidarity among Black, Indigenous, and other social workers of color.

Both gatherings are designed to remind you that you’re not alone — healing and strength grow in community. RSVP at naswoh.org/calendar
