Mr. Luca wiggled his way into our hearts during his visit with us last week to have his a**l glands expressed 🥰

Although stinky, a**l glands play a vital role in our pet's health and can lead to health complications if left untreated. A**l glands are located on the left and right of the inner a**s and release a smelly fluid that helps lubricate the a**l ca**l to ease the process of passing stool. In some individuals, this process doesn't go as planned, and the fluid buildup in these glands requires the expression of the fluid and pressure to prevent an abscess.

Signs that your pet's a**l glands may need expressing include:
- Scooting their butt across the floor
- Excessively licking their a**s
- A foul, fishy smell coming from their rear end

Happy Fresh Breath Day!

Halitosis (or bad breath) in dogs and cats is most commonly caused by a build-up of plaque and tartar on your pet's teeth. Plaque forms on clean teeth as soon as an animal starts salivating and, within a couple of days, mineralizes into tartar. If not addressed, plaque and tartar can cause gum inflammation (gingivitis) and progress into periodontitis (tooth support loss). As plague ages and gingivitis progresses, normal bacteria in the mouth start causing decay, creating very smelly sulfur compounds.

You can help prevent this in your pets by brushing their teeth and using dental chews at home to fight the buildup of plaque and tartar. This will allow your pet to have an adorable, non-smelly smile! If you are concerned about your pet's teeth, call us to schedule an appointment so we can take a peek at their mouth and talk about possible dental polishing and cleaning.

Happy Wednesday from Harvey and Trinity 🤍🐾

Harvey was so brave for his 1st heartworm test and completely stole our hearts!

It's important to keep your pup on year-round heartworm prevention. Heartworms can take up to 7 months to mature, so your pup is still at risk of contracting them during the colder months. Heartworms are spread by mosquitos, which can find their way into our homes, so even if your pup doesn't go exploring in the forest, we strongly recommend keeping them up to date on heartworm prevention and yearly testing to ensure they live a long and healthy life.

Give us a call at (614) 272-0162 with any questions and to schedule your pup for their heartworm test!

July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month💧

With the high temperatures this month, keeping yourself and your furry friends as hydrated as possible is essential. Humans' bodies consist of about 55-60% water, while our pets' bodies consist of 75-80% water, making hydration very important for them to stay happy and healthy year-round.

Some signs of dehydration include:
- lack of energy
- inappetence
- panting
- less elastic skin
- sticky and dry gums
- sunken eyes

To prevent dehydration, pets should have access to fresh, clean water inside and outside your house. Since most cats are less likely to drink water straight from a bowl, we recommend incorporating moist food in their diet and getting them a fountain with moving water (as their natural instincts tell them still water isn't safe).

Happy Fourth of July from your GRAH Family 🤍🇺🇸

We will be closed today in observance of our country's birthday and will be back in the clinic tomorrow, July 5th!

As you celebrate, keep an eye on your furry friends to ensure they don't consume harmful food/objects or get spooked by loud noises (fireworks) and flee. We recommend keeping all pets inside or on a leash and surrounding them with distractions (toys, treats, TV, etc.) to help with any anxiety this holiday's festivities may cause.

Mr. Gravy wants to know what you think of his new specs 🧐

Gravy was found on the side of the road as a kitten with feline symblepharon (an adhesion between conjunctiva, cornea, and third eyelid). Due to this and an abnormal inward rolling of the upper and lower eyelids, Gravy underwent surgery for a double enucleation (eye removal) and now lives a normal life at his furever home.

When it comes to ocular issues, it's essential to play it safe and get your furry friend into a vet to ensure that any potential harm to your pet's eyes can be prevented by proactive measures!

Team Member Tuesday - today we are introducing Kateryna (Kat)!

Kateryna is originally from a little town in Ukraine called Trostyanets, but her parents moved to the United States to join the rest of their family in Columbus, OH when she was a year old. When she was in third grade, her Grandma, who was a Veterinary Technician in Ukraine, started telling Kateryna about her experience in the field.

These stories sparked her interest in the veterinary field and after graduating from Central Crossing High School in 2023 she joined the GRAH team in October of 2023! Kateryna is particularly interested in internal medicine and diagnostics and how those can work hand-in-hand to help a patient.

Outside of the clinic, she enjoys reading, taking walks with her Black Lab/Pitbull mix Luna, volunteering at church, and hanging out with her 6 younger siblings. Kateryna also loves traveling with her church for both choir and mission trips! Along with Luna, she has a Siamese cat named Tychka (meaning “cloud” in Ukrainian).
Please say hello to Kateryna next time you are in the clinic!
