Fifty years ago, Bank Langmore loaded up the family station wagon with a new saddle, equally unused batwing chaps, a single curb bit, a menagerie of Minolta camera bodies and lenses and an ice chest full of Kodak film. He was bound for the big cow outfits of the Texas Panhandle. He had somehow convinced a Madison Avenue publishing house to commission him to spend the next two years photographing a book on the North American working cowboy.

As an adult, Bankโ€™s son John loaded up to do the same thing. โ€œIn 2012, I left my home in Austin, Texas, bound for the Spanish Ranch, the first of 14 ranches I visited, almost 40 years to the day after Dad pulled out of our Dallas driveway headed for the Four Sixes.โ€

Their photography books now stand among the legends of the genre. Ride along as John recounts their never-before-told story in the July-August issue of

This historic picture is now available! Thank you for your patience. As Mike mentioned, for those who cannot make it to Old Settlers this Thursday, Friday and Saturday we will start shipping next week. (details and address to order are in the attached and local pickup points will be stocked by end of week).

I thought you might find it interesting how this project came about. O๏ฟผne of the cowboys in the picture, Rang Thornton (top row, fifth from the right) was in possession of the only known surviving negative. He gave this negative to my mother-in-law, Frances Schweitzer Moss, who then passed it to her nephew, Mike, for safe keeping.

Mike, my husband Randy and I pondered how we could make this historic picture available to those who wanted a copy. Our thoughts were the real owners of this picture are the men in this photo who sacrificed to build the Matador Ranch and our question was how to honor them and preserve their legacy? The answer was easy, to benefit the Motley County Historical Museum in Matador.

About this time, Scott Collier, the new owner of the Matador Ranch, ๏ฟผreached out to us for Schweitzer history as he too has a passion to preserve the legacy and history. To accomplish his goal, ๏ฟผhe is working closely with with author and previous director of the Southwes๏ฟผt Collection, David Murrah.

๏ฟผOne phone call ๏ฟผto Scott and David and the friends of the Motley County Historical Museum was formed. A couple weeks later we all met at the museum to surprise the Museum Director, Marisue Burleson Potts, with the idea. ๏ฟผ I have no words to describe her reaction, so Iโ€™ll summarize that Marisue had recently authored an๏ฟผd published โ€œCowgirls Donโ€™t Cryโ€ and she was so touched that she nearly had to change the name of her book.

In hopes that you will join us in preserving and honoring these men through your donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Motley County Museum. If I can answer any questions, please let me know. ๏ฟผ
