In an alternate universe in which the USEF had acknowledged the 2021 competition renewal and the new farm owner wanted an event to run in 2021, the OJC Event could have been running this Thursday to Sunday.

It is not that alternative universe, however, so we can just remember many cool memories of OJC Eventsโ€™ past. With an Event that brought over $1 million annually in economic impact to Ocala, was run for four straight years with a clean safety record for horses and riders, and went from zero to one of the most popular in the country in four short years, we all did good.

We are proud of what we accomplished. Most of all, we are grateful to the riders, sponsors, volunteers, vendors and loyal fans who supported four years of a somewhat crazy dream of a world class eventing competition on a traditional Thoroughbred farm.

All the best to all of us who dare to dream crazy dreams. Whether or not they work out quite to plan, we become more by the dreaming and the doing.

A thought-provoking read.
By Jane Smiley
Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ignorant.
Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners.
Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance
like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work.
Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way.
A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one.
We do not require as much of any other species, including humans.
That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't.
No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one.
Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation.
A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn!
Take care of your horses and treasure them.

Sometimes you just can't save a horse. That is the medical reality of serious leg injuries such as the ruptured ligament suffered by Swiss Olympic event horse Jet Set in a freak accident at Tokyo on Sunday. However hard you try, however much you might wish the horse better, some injuries are just impossible to overcome with an acceptable quality of life for a horse.

Take Jet Set's ruptured ligament for example. You can't explain to a horse why it has to be tied up standing still for the best part of a year. You can't explain why it can't lie down instead because the weight of its internal organs would crush each other. You can't explain why its other three legs have to support its 500kg weight all on their own and why they're subsequently so sore. You can't explain why they are so full of energy but can't leave the confines of their four walls. And you can't explain (or even guarantee) that at the end of these months of near-torture there is a tiny chance that that horse might be half sound. And if, at the end of all that, the horse can't even walk pain-free it won't be a happy horse and it certainly won't have a happy life.

As hard as it can be to understand on the face of it, sometimes, it really is the kindest thing to let a horse go.

Now back to Jet Set and his heartbroken rider. After heeding the Olympic vets' advice that the only kind option was to let his beloved horse go, Robin Godel shared the news with his followers on Instagram in a grief-sticken tribute to his horse of a lifetime. At that point, the online 'pile-on' began:

And so the comments went on, hundreds upon hundreds on that post and on almost every other post from Jet Set's devastated 22-year-old rider.

In a world where mental health, kindness and compassion have never been more talked about, it must take a special kind of bitter savagery to trawl through months of posts on someone's social media feed, to target and tarnish every special memory with that wonderful horse with ill-informed hateful comments. It's as if people who ride horses are somehow fair game.

It may not be a beating with sticks and stones, but it is bullying nonetheless.

Those who have been in the awful position of having to make that final call, of putting head and science over heart and letting a beautiful, magnificent and much-loved animal go will know just how hard it is to do. It is not a decision anyone takes lightly and it is one which takes great courage in its own way.

Robin Godel and all of Jet Set's connections did the right thing by him at the end and it is clear that the horse was well-loved and incredibly well cared for in life. That combination is as much as any horse can hope for and Robin Godel deserves support and empathy rather than abuse and hatred at what is undoubtedly a low point in not only his career, but also his young life.

To all those who see fit to abuse a young man at his lowest ebb because you do not understand the complexities and necessities of a human caregiver's obligation to their horse, perhaps educate yourself both on that subject and on decency before you press send on your hateful comments.

To Robin Godel, for acting as any true horseman should and showing compassion and kindess to your horse in the most important decision of all: thank you.

The importance of constantly educating horse people on the ever changing science of horse training is paramount, in my opinion. Not only for the well being of our equine partners, but for the futurity of our equestrian sports.

When do horse training methods cross the line from accepted to abusive? Despite significant advances in scientific knowledge about horse welfare and behavior, abusive training still occurs.

CA Equestrian has recently moved to the Watkinsville/Athens area and has brought a wide range of services to the table, at an array of price points to suit everyoneโ€™s financial situations and unique horse needs.

Christine has worked and ridden for top professionals from 5* event riders and former Olympians to Grand Prix show jumpers. She has groomed at top events and ridden and worked with everything from unbroken young horses to 5* event horses, Grand Prix dressage and show jump horses, and everything in between.

She has successfully competed up through the intermediate level in eventing on a horse she produced herself, consistently scoring in the 20โ€™s on the flat and finishing almost every event, training and higher, with no added jump or time penalties, resulting in mostly top 10 finishes. She has Participated in the American Eventing Championships at both the training and preliminary level with top 10 finishes at both levels and has also completed multiple international FEI events. For competition records either reach out directly or do a USEF search of โ€œ5123360 - CHRISTINE APPLINGโ€œ.

Christine has a proven program very much geared towards horsemanship, the German Training Scale, and instilling confidence in the horses that she takes on. She has a solid base in dressage, having spent two plus years at a Dressage barn before venturing into eventing, and places a heavy emphasis on the basics and correctness from behind.
She specializes in young horses; hot, spooky, green, or otherwise missing the basics.

From their first ride ever, first ride off the track, first cross country school and beyond, she has a depth of experience, knowledge and the patience to ensure that the horses in her program are getting the positive experiences they need to thrive and progress in their own time.

She is very focused on the happiness and well-being of the horse and is excellent at communicating with owners.

She has a large network with clients looking for horses all across the east coast and is keen on finding horses their perfect homes.

Christine is available to take horses on consignment or in for training board, with the possibility of spending some of the winter in Ocala, FL.

Other services she offers include training rides, riding lessons, on ground horsemanship sessions with you and/or your horse, clipping, and much more.
