Happy Gotcha Day Willow! ❤️
6 years ago today I drove to another state to pick up 2 byb babies known to be biters. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew those two girls were going to change our lives. And boy did they! They taught us how to manage separate groups, about how light exposure affects intact jills, what coming in to season looks like, what a jill jab is like, what spay surgery recovery looks like and how bittersweet it is to build trust with ferrets that are nearly feral. Willow had completely given up on humans but Hope desperately wanted to trust again. It took years to bring Willow around to not latching on to any flesh she could get her teeth into. Today, Willow still doesn’t have much use for humans but she does enjoy her good morning scritchins and a few minutes of play time before she’s done with people again. She’s learned to trust more as she’s gotten older and lost her hearing and her sight. When I brought them home, I promised them that this was their forever home and I’m so grateful that it was. Willow has widespread lymphoma now and her journey with us is coming to an end. Hope and Addie and Simon and Zoe are all calling her Home and she spends a lot of time dead sleeping, visiting them at The Bridge and preparing her nest with all the stash toys and food she can find.
Here’s some pictures of our journey with Hope and Willow, from when I picked them up to now❤️

PENNSYLVANIA RELEASED MINK FUNDRAISER

Ok friends, we need your help! We are working to save a number of the released fur farm mink in Pennsylvania, and we have the mink farmers blessing to do so! To repeat, we have permission from the farmer to move a small number of these mink into the rescue network!

Please consider making a donation- no matter how small it is I PROMISE YOU it matters and it helps!

You can donate here, through Rocky Mountain Mink Refuge, which is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and your donations are tax deductible. *Please note that donating to us through Facebook/PayPal Giving Fund now takes up to 45 days for donations to process/clear, meaning those funds will not be available to help for quite some time. Natalie is the daughter of one of my favorite local customers. She is the sweetest little girl! She sends us handmade cards and draws pictures for us that are hanging in our shipping area. Every order that’s shipped out of here is packed beneath Natalie’s beautiful artwork. If you want to support an amazing girl, there’s some neat stuff. There’s even a mini food processor that would turn our grinds into excellent Soupies!

I don’t post personal things unless it concerns our fur babies so this post will be a little different. It’s long but it’s important. We have the best customers in the world and I want to make sure you all know how much we appreciate you.

Most of you know that the Grandma Addie’s team consists of me (Dawn) and Brian, but some of you don’t. We are just two people with a passion for ferrets and healthy nutrition for pets. All of the processing, portioning, labeling, packing and shipping is done by the two of us. When items are out of stock, there’s always a reason, and usually it’s because we either can’t get the ingredients or the containers. Sometimes though, like recently, it’s a combination of the above issues and the fact that we are just two people.

In the past 6 months, I’ve had two hip repair surgeries. Each time, I was totally out of commission for a month and Brian was on his own. On top of handling all of the processing and shipping, he handled every day to day chore that running a small farm and family entails. During this time, Brian has also been waiting patiently for me to heal so that he can have a total hip replacement. (The surgeon literally said his hip was trashed lol) Sometimes, he just needs a break or time to work on other things that need attention around the property.

So, Grandma Addie’s will be closed for two weeks beginning September 25th. We plan to back on October 9th. We will ship on September 25th but after that we are closed for both shipping and pick up orders. You can still place orders but we will not be doing any processing until after we come back in October so we won’t be adding any inventory during that time.

This break will allow us time for me to finish healing from my surgery last month and time to catch up on projects that need attention before Brian’s surgery this month. Hopefully we can even take a few days off and just relax lol

I really can’t tell you what an honor and a privilege it is to not only provide healthy, nutritious food for your ferrets but to also spoil them with little toys and boxes and paper to play in. I appreciate you guys sticking with us through all the challenges over the years and I wanted to give a little explanation about what’s been happening in our lives so you understand the inventory issues we’ve had.

Here’s an old pic of Grandma Addie herself from 3 years ago. ❤️❤️

📢Fun Fact Friday!📢 Did you know that captive born animals such as the mink in our care get a lot of their enrichment through toys?🧸 Yep! You heard that right!

There are organizations that prefer all captive animals and those at sanctuaries to be hands-off and only have natural elements in their enclosures, with absolutely no human elements at all.🌳

We think this does them an injustice... as much as you can add natural elements into an enclosure, it will never be the same as them roaming wild and providing the level of enrichment they would have from that. We all do the best we can for those in our care, and we know that our animals get a great deal of enrichment and benefit from being allowed to play and employ natural behaviors on safe toys given to them.

There are those who argue that man-made objects like toys pose a risk to the animals, but the same can be said of any natural elements too. All captive animals should always be supervised during interactions with new toys and adjustments made according to their unique behaviors. If you have am animal prone to chewing behaviors, then don't provide it those items that can lead to a blockage risk. If you have an animal with bad coordination or poor eyesight, do not provide it with items that require or provide climbing and risk falling.

Toys are always checked for wear and tear and overall damages on a regular basis. Those with damage are removed and repaired if possible, otherwise are thrown away for safety. Some of our mink and ferrets are a little rougher with their toys than others and they don't always last quite as long, but the enrichment is just as important for them as for others, and sometimes even more so, as these are the more active animals that need a lot more stimulation to provide adequate mental and physical wellbeing.📦🪅🧩🧸

Our animals are also provided other natural activities and interaction with us, as well as culled whole prey meals for a different kind of enrichment too.

If you'd like to sponsor or donate some toys off our Minky Wishlist, the link for it is below. If you donate funds towards that specifically, please message us or add a note to it that it is for Minky Stuff.

Three women were injured by an otter Wednesday evening while floating on the Jefferson River.

About 8:15 p.m., the three women were floating on inner tubes about 3 miles upstream from Sappington Bridge when they observed one or two otters. An otter approached and attacked them. The women got out of the water, and the otter swam away.

The women then called 911, and several agencies responded, including Montana Highway Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Valley Ambulance, and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Life Flight and a local landowner.

All three women were injured during the encounter and received medical treatment in Bozeman. One of them, whose injuries were more serious, was taken to the hospital in a helicopter.

FWP staff have posted signs at several fishing access sites in the area advising recreationists of otter activity. No further management action is planned at this time.

While attacks from otters are rare, otters can be protective of themselves and their young, especially at close distances. They give birth to their young in April and can later be seen with their young in the water during the summer. They may also be protective of food resources, especially when those resources are scarce. Otters are members of the weasel family.

FWP advises recreationists to keep a wide distance, giving all wildlife plenty of space. In drought conditions, low water levels can bring recreationists closer to water-dwelling wildlife. Being aware and keeping your distance can help avoid dangerous encounters, reduce stress for wildlife, and promote healthy animal behavior. If you are attacked by an otter, fight back, get away and out of the water, and seek medical attention.

Happy Monday from Ember Foxfire, Rebel Mink 😎🔥
Did you know that it takes time for rescued fur farm mink to feel completely comfortable with swimming?

Most are incredibly drawn to water, and will immediately dunk & splash in a typical water dish. But it can take a bit of time and practice before they feel comfortable climbing into a larger body of water and actually swimming.

Ember is well beyond the beginner jitters! She is rolling and diving in the water like a pro, swimming through underwater tubes and easily finding the frozen whole prey we toss into the water 😎

Any spare pennies? Let’s help the minkies and the ferts stay cool!

Hello! I apologize for the lack of posting, the rescue has been in emergency mode.🔥Monday morning some time after our post that day, the AC/Central Air Cooling died and we've been in an emergency state to make sure that all the animals are kept just out of heatstroke risk by constantly checking water levels, offering frozen treats/meat, ice cubes in water dishes, frozen water bottles, blowing loose standing fans over water since regular fans don't help animals that don't perspirate. All of this has been a major and stressful feat so far as we have limited freezer space and ice cube making capabilities while having 3 separate large rooms dedicated to the animals in our care with multiple cages.

We've looked into various temporary and backup options for cooling while waiting on the AC to be replaced (our unit type is not being manufactured anymore), which is going to likely take a couple weeks and about $22,000 later (the furnace will be replaced as well to match with the new AC system, the AC alone is roughly $12-13K). The average temperature inside is running around 83F, which is too high for ferrets or mink, so we are looking to getting a couple portable aircons/swamp coolers to use right now until the AC issue can be fixed. Costco currently has some on sale for $300 that might work.

We have a GoFundMe page running right now for this heat disaster, but direct donations through Venmo, PayPal, Cashapp and Zelle can be put to use right away in getting some emergency measures resolved faster.

Due to the nature of this problem, we won't have as much personal funds to cover the rescue bills like normal, which currently are $5500 outstanding already. All intakes are thus still on hold until further notice.⛔️ Remember, all donations to our rescue are tax-deductible!

‼️Sharing our posts and pages allow rescues to reach more people who may be willing to help without always only getting support from the same individuals.
