I do remember that era!

In 1954, the average Ford factory worker in Detroit made around $1.89 an hour, about $75 a week, or nearly $4,000 a year. It was enough to buy a new car (roughly $1,700), a modest home (about $10,000), and support a family on a single income.

Thanks to strong unions like the UAW, workers had access to healthcare, pensions, and paid vacation - unheard of for most laborers just a decade earlier. Detroit was the heart of America’s postwar boom, churning out millions of cars and middle-class dreams.

By the mid-1950s, nearly 60% of Americans were classified as middle class. Suburbs like this popped up around the Motor City as GIs returned home and families grew.

It was a brief golden window where blue-collar work could fuel white-picket-fence living.
