Do you speak compost? Dream in crop plans? Feel called to protect pollinators and uplift people?

Moonwater Farm is looking for a Land Steward to join our collective! This part-time role in Compton is for someone who can build soil, increase yield, tend trees, wrangle a chipper, care for livestock, harvest mulberries, lead a school group, and speak up loudly for land and liberation. It’s hands-on, heart-first, and rooted in purpose.

🐝Happy World Bee Day! 🐝
If you’ve purchased a .to.shelf item this season it probably had local honey as part of its recipe! We’ve been blessed to have as our guide and wisdom keeper sharing secrets, knowledge and profound reverence for the bees.

Our hive are a gentle lot who decided Moonwater would be a good place to live - we know they have some delicious food sources!

One of our greatest surprises came in the sublime flavor and energy in the bee nectar - a rarefied experience!!

Bee sure to thank a bee this week for your food! And plant some flowers for our friends! They are needing all the support we can muster this year.

We had a a spectacular day yesterday with Holmes Elementary sharing lessons in Black Cowboy culture with the venerable Mike Davis, BBQ science with and the power of seed saving with . The lessons reminded us of the powerful inspiration that shifted our vision permanently and brought us into deep relationship with and the OGs of Black Cowboy and Vaquero culture in South Los Angeles.

We are forever grateful for the profound influence and inspiration our local equestrians have bred here at Moonwater.

It’s a joy to find brilliant educators using these stories to teach literacy, history and empowerment for the next generation.

Knowledge is power.

🌎 For your Earth Day pleasure, we present Puya alpestris zoellneri, formerly known as Puya berteroniana. She’s a native of Chile in the Andes and a pineapple relative🍍 - a terrestrial bromeliad (grown in the ground, not the air). 🏔 The word Puya is derived from the Mapuche indigenous word meaning point. In Quechua, she can be referred to as titanka, santun, ilakuash or qishqi

Her blue-to-teal color floral display is unrivaled in the natural world (our pics hardly do her justice), and she has bright orange stamens full of nectar. Her sterile floral parts are perches for birds. She’s screaming, “Come taste me!!”

Her foliage is spikey and curved - a good security plant and very drought tolerant. Growing her is not for the faint of heart, however, as she gets big and can be troublesome to tidy up.

We invite you to check out her magnificence - it has taken 10 years for this flower to show! She won’t be here long and lives streetside, so no appointment necessary. If you are a plant geek like us, you won’t be disappointed.

The Puya family has as many as 168 species including the tallest bromeliad in the world – Queen of the Andes, which blooms once in 80 years!

What Earth wonders are you marvelling at today?

🥚 Look at these eggcellent specimens will you? The girls are starting to lay again what with the equinox approaching and the warmth of Spring bringing temperatures up.

🥚 Most commercial laying hens don’t get a break - they live in lighted conditions to keep them laying. At Moonwater we know the importance of cycles, rest, and renewal. It cost quite a bit to feed a chicken and get no eggs though 😭

🥚 Fun fact: you can see two fertilized eggs in this picture - which hens does our rooster prefer? Know how to tell? Drop your guess in the comments with correct nomenclature to get a free half dozen!

Also - save the date! .to.shelf will be holding their second market at the end of the month - save the date 3/29!!
