Our very own Dr. Nostrant at the Chi University last week for the hands-on portion of his Acupuncture training coursework.

February is Equine Dental Health Awareness Month!

Proper dental care is essential to your horse's overall health. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) recommends annual dental exams as part of routine care. Regular dental check-ups and floats ensure that your horse maintains good oral health, which can prevent various health issues and improve their quality of life.

While NBEA does not offer dental floats at our practice, we are more than happy to recommend veterinarians who specialize in equine dental care and can provide this important service. Ensuring your horse's teeth are well cared for is a crucial part of their overall wellness.

Is your horse currently on pergolide (Prascend)?

The University of Minnesota is looking for horses over the age of 15, currently on pergolide for at least 6 months, for a PPID study.

❓Did you know that up to 30% of aged horses may be diagnosed with Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID, also known as equine Cushing’s) in their lifetime? This disease brings many challenges with senior horse care to both horse owners and veterinarians. 🐴

🔬 Researchers at the University of Minnesota and University of Florida are motivated to better understand this disease through investigating the genetics associated with PPID risk and pergolide response in horses. 🧬

👉 Do you have a horse being treated for PPID? We could use your help! In order to properly answer the genetic questions surrounding disease risk and drug response, we are continuing to enroll horses with PPID (diagnosed by a veterinarian) that are being treated with pergolide.

Ever seen or heard of a "zombie eye" in a horse?

This old man was in chronic pain due to a long standing eye condition that was no longer responding to medication. Dr. Shen removed his eye under standing sedation in early December and his owner reported a notable decrease in his pain related behaviors a few days after.

Enucleation is a viable last resort for eyes that are painful and treatment options have been exhausted.

Many times these horses have lived with chronic pain for long periods of time and removing the source (the eye) can be life changing for them!

COTH has compiled a great resource of organizations that help direct aid and support to horses and other large animals affected this past week.
