Do you have a senior horse?
Before winter settles in this season, consider running bloodwork to make sure your older four-legged friend is ready for the colder, shorter days ahead.

If you are a big Yellowstone fan, you may have watched the episode that came out this past week. You also probably saw Rip give IM Banamine to a horse (and himself, but that's a different story for a different day).
The show incorrectly demonstrates the proper method for administering injectable Banamine(flunixin meglumine) to a horse.
While the label indicates that Banamine can be given either intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV), it's widely recognized in the equine veterinary community that IM injections of Banamine can lead to serious side effects. Injecting Banamine into the muscle can cause muscle damage. Additionally, spores of Clostridium bacteria, which may be dormant in healthy muscle tissue, can become active if the muscle is damaged from an IM injection. This can result in Clostridial myositis, a severe and sometimes fatal infection.
Our veterinarians have seen first hand the complications and serious side effects caused by well-meaning care takers giving injectable Banamine IM. If your horse is needing Banamine and you do not feel comfortable giving an IV injection, please use oral Banamine paste instead.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding injectable Banamine, please reach out to your veterinarian so that they can let you know the safest way to deliver pain medication to your horse.

While most of the NBEA staff was at Equine Affaire, Dr. Cory was down in Kentucky at Spy Coast Farm furthering her education and skills at the ISELP conference.

Coincidentally, three of our clients and their horses made the US Dressage Finals at Kentucky Horse Park and Dr. Cory was able to sneak away to watch some of their tests during a break in her day.

Wubbo and Stanley, Barilla and Kirstin, and Patrick and Emily did fantastic with some great scores over the last few days!

Congratulations to all of them and their trainers and support teams for making it to the finals!
