Beginning today through the end of the year Animal Care Clinic will be collecting donations for a very important local rescue that we support called Danny's Feral Cat Solutions. The folks that run Danny's are very dear to us here at ACC and do a lot of selfless work for our community finding the ferals in the area the healthcare they need as well as placing kittens in loving homes all over North and South Carolina. They are truly something special! This year we have created a fundraiser in hopes to help them continue this tireless work! Come by the clinic and pull a kitty from the tree to gift them with something they need or donate directly to their organization. Any little thing will help through out the year!

Thanksgiving is this Thursday so we thought we would share some tips on how to keep your pets safe and healthy over the holiday!

1. Certain Foods can be Poisonous to Pets
Chocolate, artificial sweeteners found in sugar-free baked goods, raw dough/eggs (if you’re making a cake/bread), garlic, onions, grapes, raisins and turkey skin to name a few. Fatty foods like gravy, turkey skin and nuts, aren’t poisonous, but they’re really hard to digest. Our vets recommend: It’s best to stick to their regular diet!

2. Skip the Bones
Dogs and cats love bones. But bones – especially poultry (chicken/turkey) bones – have been known to splinter and break in the esophagus or intestines after they’re eaten. And that can lead to an emergency room visit or an expensive surgery. Our vets recommend: if you want to spoil your furry friends give them extra of the dog/cat treats they already love!

3. Clear the Trash as You go
In the madness of preparing your feast, you may forget to clear the counter. Or maybe after you eat dinner, and the drowsiness sets in, you forget to clear the turkey off the table. You know who won’t forget? Your pets! Our vets recommend: clear the table/counters as you go and take the trash out pronto.

4. Don’t Forget Them Outside
Pets are just as susceptible to the effects of windchill and cold temps as we are. Sometimes, with a full house, it can be easiest to put your pets outside for awhile – just don’t forget them there! Our vets recommend: Remember, if it’s cold to you, it’s cold to them!

5. Know Your Emergency Vet Options
A lot of vet clinics are closed for Thanksgiving and the day after. If something does happen, that can be a bit of a problem. Our vets recommend: Have a 24-hour emergency vet’s number on hand just in case.

In the first week of November, National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is recognized nationally. The week is set aside to honor those who selflessly help animals that are stray or have been abandoned. These people work hard to provide for these animals and keep them healthy until they are adopted and go to their forever home.

There are about 70 million stray animals in the United States. Up to 8 million of these animals end up in shelters. There are 3,500 animal shelters in the country. It’s at these animal shelters that pets receive a second chance. According to the ASPCA, over 3 million shelter animals are adopted each year.

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week was founded in 1996 by the Humane Society of the United States. Their goal was to acknowledge and promote the role of animal shelters nation-wide. Another goal of the week is to encourage citizens to become familiar with their local animal shelter and help them when possible. Many animals are in need of a home, and animal shelters serve a very important role in the process of finding them one.

There are many ways you can help your local shelter. Listed below are a few ideas:

Adopt or foster a pet.

This is probably the best way that you can help, since the number one goal of animal shelters is to find permanent homes for animals in need.

Donate funds or supplies.

Shelters are always appreciative of donations that can make the lives of the animals in their care better. Whether it is toys and food for the animals, or money so the shelter can choose what they need most, shelters are appreciative of extra assistance.

Volunteer.

If you are unable to adopt, there are many different ways you could offer your time to help at the animal shelter.
