Bear Spot Farm and Foundation

Bear Spot Farm and Foundation Our Page is dedicated to people that love dressage and horses. Bear Spot Farm was established in the early 90's in Concord, MA by Jane Karol.

Our goal is to provide news and updates about our farm and our foundation and to share our love for horses and equine psychotherapy. The unique name comes from her two dogs, Bear and Spot, who had been with her for some time, though sadly have now passed. In the last 18 years, the farm has grown from a one barn establishment to a multiple-building, top quality boarding and training facility. Bear

Spot Foundation offers a unique combination of traditional psychotherapy with dressage riding and horse care. The Foundation's programs have successfully addressed the needs of clients with affective disorders (like depression), ADD/ADHD, anorexia, bulimia and concerns related to low self-esteem, separation and loss and anxiety and phobias. A 501(c) non-profit organization, we rely on donor funds to provide low-cost or no-cost therapy to children in need and to support the needs of our rescue horses.

🌟Michelle Serbent’s Heche did two beautiful Prix Saint Georges with Hope! We can not wait to see Heche and Michelle in the ring together soon!
🌟McKenzie Dicks and Hope Cooper’s Flynn made their show debut by competing in Kenzie’s FEI Juniors class, which was rewarded with scores over 68%!
🌟Josie DeChaine aboard Mary Mansfield’s Chocolate received a personal best in the I2!
🌟Allie Shelleman and Otelo made their first show appearance together, doing two great 3-1 tests and helping Otelo gain confidence in the ring!

What a great weekend spent at the Absorbine/New England Dressage Association Symposium featuring British team member, World Equestrian Games and European Championship medalist, Gareth Hughes!
Leah Drew and Dezi were selected out of many of applicants to ride in the symposium! Leah guided Dezi through the new atmosphere like a pro and gained so much valuable insight from Gareth!
Hope Cooper and Ollie, owned by the Richard/Dicks family, also had the opportunity to participate! This was Hope and Ollie’s first outing together and they proved that they are an incredible pair to keep an eye on for the future! A big thank you to Paul for his expert grooming this weekend!
Thank you to the sponsors who made this symposium possible, to Mount Holyoke College for hosting, to NEDA for all of the hard work and dedication it takes to put on a well-run event on this scale and of course to Gareth, for sharing his knowledge with us stateside!

Bear Spot Farm was lucky to have Professional Therapeutic Farrier Steve O’Grady DVM work alongside our incredible farrier Neo Ruiz & team for a busy day of shoeing - in fact, so busy, we did not have time to get a picture of Steve and Neo in action!
Thank you, Steve, for making the trip to share your expertise and collaborating with Neo to help our horses to preform their best! What a day!

What a week in Chicago 🤩

At the end of August, 3 Bear Spot Farm riders had the honor of competing at the USEF Festival Of Champions!

Jane Karol and Via were invited to compete in the Developing Grand Prix division, in which there were many talented young horses! Jane masterfully piloted Via to a 3rd place finish in the I2 and a 5th place finish in the Developing Grand Prix test, putting them in 4th overall! Thank you Christoph Koschel for coming stateside to coach and for your support in Jane and Via’s journey!

Sophia and Magic took on the FEI Young Riders! There was no pressure or expectation going in to the week, just to have fun and get in the arena. But this pair knocked it out of the park. A clean test for both the Young Rider Team and Individual put them in second place both days, earning the title of Young Rider National Reserve Champion! It has been incredible to watch their partnership develop and we know that the best is yet to come!

Josie DeChaine and Chocolate rode in the U25 Brentina Cup championship. This was a new level of competition for Josie, but Chocolate once again earns his schoolmaster title and carried her confidently through the I2, U25 Grand Prix, and Grand Prix Freestyle. They earned a pretty purple ribbon, finishing 7th overall! Thank you to Chocolate’s incredible owner Mary for selflessly allowing Josie to learn at this level and gain invaluable show experience! We cannot wait to see what is next for these two.

Congratulations not only to our riders, but to everyone who has helped make this championship a reality for them - owners, grooms, farriers, friends, veterinarians, body workers, families, you name it! That includes trainers like our very own Jane and Hope. You continue to bring out the best in every horse and rider at Bear Spot Farm and beyond - we are so fortunate to learn from you every day!
The week also would not have been possible without Amanda McNeil. The amount of planning, knowledge and work it takes to create a seamless week at a horse show is unimaginable, yet somehow she does it again and again! Not to mention how beautifully she makes the horses show ready!
It takes a village 🩷

Another successful show in Saugerties!

☀️Jane and Via are now ranked 2nd in the country in the Developing Grand Prix! They were rewarded with a 70.8% in the Developing Grand Prix class and a 68% in the I2!

☀️Leah rode Jazz and Dezi in the Young Rider Team test on Saturday, where both horses received a blue ribbon, each finishing on a 67.5! In the Young Rider Individual on Sunday, Leah again put in two consistent and steady tests, earning a 67.8 with Jazz with Dezi not far behind!

☀️Callie O’Connell joined us with Ruling Cortes LLC’s wonderful geldings, Eaton and Blue! She and Eaton started the weekend by earning a 69.7% in the Grand Prix. On Sunday, Eaton took the win with a 71.1% in the Grand Prix Special and Blue won the Prix Saint Georges!

☀️Amy Desautels had a fun ride in the I1 with Jimmy in the I1 on Sunday, even though Jimmy thought an extra circle should be added to the test!

☀️Congratulations to our good friends Giulia, Illy, and their coach Emily Wyman, on the win in the Saturday Prix Saint George, scoring 72.7%!

A huge thank you to Amanda, Hope, Jane, Leah, and our entire crew at home for yet another smooth weekend of showing!
