A New Year! A New Farm! It took a while, almost two years, but we found a new place to live, love and farm. We are tucked in the northwest corner of Concord, NH on the northwest slope of Carter Hill. The view of the Kearsarge Mountain range is beautiful and the sunsets have been spectacular. We can hike one of several trails or follow our own stream down to the Contoocook River in just a few minutes time. And, the soils are prefect for growing fruit and veggies: deep, well drained sandy loam with a gentle northwesterly slope. Downtown Concord and the highways are just 11 minutes away (in the country but close to everything). We start building our new farm in the spring!

Memorial Day Weekend usually marks the beginning of the summer vegetable growing season. But unfortunately, as you know, the weather of the past week has been cold and rainy. Last week's mini heat wave is just a memory and the rain and lack of sun has cooled the soil significantly. So much so that planting your warm weather crops like tomatoes, peppers and summer squash needs to be delayed until the soil warms up again. [ 252 more words ]

Last weekend we had some of the coldest weather of the winter. Sunday was the most brutal. During the day temperatures didn’t climb above 13˚. At night temperatures dropped to minus 13˚ on our farm. With winds gusting up to 28 miles per hour, the cold was simply wicked. Winter winds are especially damaging to plants because they suck the moisture (desiccation) right out of plants.
