We have a big announcement!!!

As of September 8, 2024 Meg’s Grooming Salon and Pet Resort will be under new management and eventual ownership! I have found an absolutely wonderful business owner/professional dog groomer who wants to make our facility her second location and bring the grooming skills she provides for Hutchinson and the surrounding area to Concordia Kansas! We here at Meg‘s are so excited to have found someone just as skilled and dedicated as we are to the care of your pets! Holly is an amazing person and we couldn’t be happier to have her taking over! She plans to continue to offer not only professional grooming services, but also boarding, doggy daycare and dog training. I will be staying on for a while to help make the transition as smooth as possible for both Holly, her new staff, and you-our amazing clientele. So don’t worry, you will still see me in the facility, I’m not going anywhere, just taking a step back and handing over the reins 🙂.

Please help me in welcoming another extremely skilled business owner to our friendly and thriving downtown business district!! Let’s show her our awesome small town support and why we were voted the most friendly small town in the USA!!!!

Hey everyone! I am so excited to introduce myself to all you wonderful patrons of Meg’s Pet Resort!! My name is Holly. I have always had a passion for animals. Growing up, my goal was to become a veterinarian. After a few years in the field as a veterinary technician I realized my passions lay elsewhere and that was when I decided to take the leap into grooming. I have been in the pet services industry since 2015. Grooming allows me to be creative and artistic while still working with animals. I am AKC S.A.F.E. certified, Fear Free certified, I have a bachelor’s degree in animal science through Friends University and I am CPR and First Aid certified. I have a zoo of animals at home that includes 6 Great Pyrenees, a standard poodle, a husky and a border collie mix, a mix of about 40 chickens/guineas/turkeys and a horse. Oh, and my 5 children as well, they are 100% part of the zoo. 🤣 I am really looking forward to meeting all of you and your pets and helping to be a integral part of caring for your pets wellbeing! If there are any questions what-so-ever, please don’t hesitate to ask and stay tuned into the page so you don’t miss the upcoming meet and greet that I will be hosting! 🤗

To those contemplating the rehoming of a pet, this is not intended to cause shame or guilt, but rather to encourage thoughtful consideration.

It is essential to recognize that there is no ideal home where individuals magically acquire more time or resources. Similarly, there is no farmer in need of an untrained dog, nor is there a rescue organization with unlimited resources and time to devote to every dog.

The reality is that many well-behaved and loving dogs languish in shelters and foster care for extended periods, sometimes exceeding a year, without receiving any adoption applications.

Before resorting to rehoming, it is crucial to exhaust all available options and make every effort to ensure a successful and fulfilling life for your pet. This may involve seeking professional training, exploring alternative care arrangements, or addressing any behavioral challenges.

Remember, rehoming should only be considered as a last resort, and every effort should be made to find a suitable and loving home for your pet.

I would like to make a public announcement:

Don’t panic and please don’t speculate or listen to idle gossip. I’m sure that many of our local clientele have noticed that there is now realtor/for sale signs up at our facility. I would like to set the record straight about my reasoning for putting Meg’s Grooming Salon and Pet Resort on the market.

I was diagnosed with MS(multiple sclerosis) back in 2011. I have battled with the symptoms of this disease off and on since being diagnosed. The wheelchair that many of my Group training classes have seen me bring out during classes to acclimate their dogs to people in wheelchairs is MY actual prescribed chair.

The reason I bring our the wheel chair and walker during classes to help ensure that more dogs are used to people using this equipment, just in case another MS relapse should ever put me back in mine the way it did in 2011/12. My family has been worried about my health and trying to convince me to sell the business for over a year, but I refused to let go of my dream or admit what was happening to my body healthwise. It has finally come to my realization that they were right and I have been pushing my body past its limits and it is time for me to take a step back and take better care of myself for the sake of my children.

After losing my son last year, my priorities and health have changed, and since this is basically a 24/7 business, I can no longer run it the way it deserves to be ran without sacrificing precious time with my family or risking my health.

I plan to do everything I can to keep Meg’s open until a new owner comes along to take over. In order to do that I will be making some changes to our hours of operation and the services we offer to ensure that I am also able to take care of my health and my family. I am still working out the details and will post updates as we get everything restructured. We thank you for your continued support and understanding during this difficult time of transition.

Say it louder for those in the back! Here at Meg’s we are all about educating owners and helping them create well-balanced and well-behaved dogs, but owners have to be willing to put in the work and take it seriously. There is no magic wand that can create a well-trained and well-behaved dog in only a handful of one-hour long group sessions with minimal to no work and practice outside of class. You have to be willing to consistently show up, pay attention, listen, and most of all do the homework and practice what you learn in class with your dog!!🙂 This is a foundation for every dog trainers curriculum yet it seems to be such a hard concept for owners to grasp. Your dog is not a computer, and we cannot simply or permanently reprogram their behavior in a few hours in a group setting with no further practice or follow up from the owner to make sure the new lessons stick.

~ EDUCATION OVER ENTERTAINMENT ~

There was a time when people genuinely sought to learn, to engage with experts and mentors, and to apply newfound knowledge to better themselves and their relationships with their dogs. In those days, the pursuit of skill and understanding was paramount.

At Sparks K9 Services, we've been conducting group classes for many years. However, in recent times, we've noticed a shift in some people's expectations of what a group class entails.

Despite our clear descriptions and warnings that our classes are structured, homework-intensive, and demand students meet measurable standards, we occasionally encounter individuals who believe class time should be akin to a social gathering.

A group class filled with inexperienced handlers and dogs, without structure and clear expectations of progress and standards, quickly descends into chaos. This environment is neither safe nor productive for dogs or humans.

Conversely, students who attend class focused on listening, learning, and applying their knowledge quickly achieve well-trained companion dogs. These students ask pertinent questions, utilize our online training materials and student forums, and submit homework videos for feedback.

On the other hand, some students mistakenly believe the classroom is where their dog will be trained. They arrive unprepared, having not studied or applied the previous lessons. Their dogs, too, are unprepared, not having been shown what they need to learn. These students often end up frustrated, unfairly blaming their dogs.

Ironically, this second type of student is usually the one advocating for a more fun and interactive classroom experience, despite being the very ones inhibiting it. It only takes a small number of unprepared dog-handler teams to significantly limit the amount of safe and effective group work.

In essence, education over entertainment is the key to a successful training experience. Let's prioritize learning and structure to ensure both dogs and handlers thrive.

Our basic obedience classes are not meant to be some sort of Circus to entertain the masses; they are meant to raise the standards of what you expect from your dog, and help you achieve those standards effectively and humanely.

If you are serious about training your dog to measurable standards of excellence and reliability, we have the knowledge, resources, trainers, and experience to get you there.

If you are just looking to be entertained and not challenged to grow with your dog, you might want to look elsewhere.

Properly trained dogs and handlers are not only safer, but they are also able to have a LOT more fun together in a LOT more places, doing a LOT more things.

07/18/2024

Management is the other side of the training coin. This looks different for different households, but it's no different than what we'd do with a human child. We start with heavier structure and management, and over time, as the dog or puppy becomes more reliable with the appropriate habits and behaviors, we can lessen it and give them more freedom.

06/24/2024

Quick PSA –PLEASE READ🙂
I’ve had 7 phone calls this morning for people wanting grooming appointments, which is great except for the fact that we are booked out several weeks because this is our busiest season. Being booked out isn’t the problem, the people who are booking appointments and then not showing up is the problem.😢 Almost every single person I spoke to this morning either didn’t want to wait that long to get in, told me to put them down but made it obvious they were going to call around other places to see if they could get in sooner(known in the industry as shop-hopping), or one just straight up told me to put them down and she would see if they could make it work🙃(which is a clear signal that they are probably not going to show up for the appointment).

Right now we have a 38% no call/no-show rate!! We have spoken to other industry professionals in the area and they are having the exact same problem(grooming, and boarding reservations). We are finding that we have many clients in common that are booking appointments/reservations at several locations for the same dates and only showing up to one of us(taking money out of the other providers pockets😔)Could you afford to take a 38% pay cut? We can’t.

No one wants to be that business owner and say it out loud, but ouch! As a small business owner, we cannot afford to take that big of a hit and still survive. Your appointment does matter and missing it without letting us know you won’t be coming is a BIG DEAL. We only have so many hours/appointments each day to earn a living, feed our children, and pay our bills; when you book an appointment, you are asking us to set aside one of those timeslots specifically for you with the expectation that you are agreeing to pay for your timeslot in our work day. When you don’t show up, we don’t get paid! When we don’t get paid we can’t pay our bills. We can’t survive. We are stuck setting at work but not getting paid for our time.
That also means that someone else could’ve taken your appointment and gotten in sooner If you had let us know you weren’t showing up.
I apologize for having to implement this temporary policy, but it has gotten out of hand, so From now one our no call no-show policy/less than 24 hours notice that you need to cancel will need to be paid in full for the service you booked. Please don’t book an appointment if you aren’t certain you are going to keep it. This seems to be the only way that we can make sure to get our wonderful LOYAL clients in for an appointment in a timely manner, and detour the Riff Raff that are costing us our livelihood. If you book an appointment with us the appointment will be yours to pay for in full(unless you cancel with more than 24 hours notice so we can fill the appointment)-Whether you choose to show up for it or not is up to you.🙂

Mi Vida Loca! I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried, but meet our new temporary house resident for a couple of days💗 We are calling her Chet(if you’ve ever seen the Santa Clause movies will understand the reference ). She is a few days old and one of the new babies in our elk herd. We found her down and suffering from what we believe is heat stroke and dehydration yesterday so we brought her home to hopefully nurse her back to health. How many people can say they have a bottle baby ELK calf in their kitchen?😂 🤗
She made it through the night and is a little bit stronger this morning, but still wears out quickly suckling the bottle and struggles to hold her weight for a very long. Little Chet has a ways to go before she can return to the herd, but if anyone can bring her back from the brink it’s my husband Jeremy💗💗 we will post pictures and updates over the next couple of days for anyone who would like to cheer her on.

The article we were interviewed for by Reuters about a month ago 🙃 We are doing our best to hang in there, but we could definitely use more local support. Shop small, Amazon doesn’t support your children’s/grandchildren/nieces/nephews local area yearbooks, and youth sports teams.💗

In a tiny town surrounded by miles of rippling wheat fields, Brady Peterson's restaurant sits nearly empty during what should be a Saturday lunch rush. Normally, Pete's would be filled with farmers ordering fried chicken and cheeseburgers, but as farm income thins, so does Peterson's business.
