What makes the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners’ specialists unique?
ABVP certifies specialists by species or species groups, rather than body system. Most other veterinary specialist organizations certify veterinarians and doctors by a body system such as surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, dermatology, reproduction, neurology, cardiology, etc. For example, veterinarians who specialize in surgery (American College of Veterinary Surgeons) can choose large animal (horses, livestock) or small animals (dogs/cats, etc.) but are only trained in surgery and are expected to be specialists in only surgery for all of the covered species. In contrast, ABVP Diplomates specialize by species and are trained and expected to know specialist level care across internal medicine, surgery, reproduction, ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, etc. for that specific species or species group. An Avian (bird) Diplomate of the ABVP must demonstrate specialist level knowledge of all aspects of bird care across all of those mentioned specialty areas. An Equine ABVP Diplomate must demonstrate knowledge of surgery, internal medicine, reproduction, dermatology, ophthalmology, etc. for horses specifically. This allows veterinarians who want to practice specialist level care, but don’t want to limit their focus to only surgery, or only internal medicine, or only reproduction, to have an avenue to still become specialists in the species of interest.
ABVP is also one of the only specialty organizations that has a residency pathway as well as a private practice route for board certification!!! If you are a private veterinary practitioner and you have always wanted to pursue board certification, but did not complete a residency or didn’t want to limit yourself to only surgery or only internal medicine, please visit abvp.com for more information on how you may be able to pursue ABVP Diplomate status while still working in private practice!
Currently the various options for practice specialties within ABVP include: Avian, Beef Cattle, Canine and Feline, Dairy, Equine, Exotic Companion Mammal, Feline, Food Animal, Reptile & Amphibian, Swine, and Shelter Medicine.
