Show your pet some love by including them in your emergency preparedness! Do you have the items your pet needs in your emergency kit?

Taking my dog on a date night to discuss our emergency plan. He’s really into it, especially the part about the extra treats.
Flashlight? Check.
Emergency chew toys? Double check.
Now if only I could get him to stay calm during a thunderstorm...

The Animal Care Center is in custody of 13 animals seized in the below Horry County Police Department investigation.

The seized animals are not available for adoption, nor public view or news media access.

If you are hoping to help the ACC at this time, please consider adopting one of the current adoptables instead. Adopting, regardless of the pet, creates more room in our kennels for this necessary intake.

ARREST – ANIMAL CARE & TREATMENT CASE

One person has been arrested and 13 dogs seized in connection with an animal care and treatment case.

Michael Smalls, 44, of Conway, faces 13 counts of illegal animal care and treatment after an investigation determined that a number of animals on his property were emaciated and improperly housed. The circumstances in which the dogs were found were in direct opposition to the County ordinance 4-3 “Animal Care & Treatment.”

On Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, Horry County Police Department Environmental Services officers responded to the Juniper Bay area of unincorporated Horry County after receiving an anonymous tip from a community member. Responding officers noted multiple animal violations. Ultimately, 13 dogs were transported to the Horry County Animal Care Center for assessment, treatment, and care, where they remain at this time.

The dogs involved in this case are not currently available for adoption or rescue. (If you are hoping to help the ACC at this time, please consider adopting one of the current adoptables instead. Adopting, regardless of the pet, creates more room in our kennels for this necessary intake.)

Community members are reminded that public safety is a partnership—we count on you to see something, say something. To report suspicious activity, call Horry County 911 dispatch at 843-248-1520.

To submit a non-emergent, animal-related crime tip to the HCPD Environmental Services Division, email [email protected].

TNR: DONATE TO THAT AND NAME A CAT

It's simple - donate $5 to the ACC, and name a feral cat that we spay/neuter through our TNR program. We will accept donations for this program from Feb. 3-13, 2025.

TNR stands for 'Trap-Neuter-Return'. The program is aimed at caring for community cats and controlling feline population growth. 'Trap, neuter, return' is the humane practice of trapping feral cats who cannot be domesticated and brought inside as pets, spaying/neutering them, and returning them to their original location.

Donations can be made in person at the clinic desk (building 2 at 1923 Industrial Park Rd., Conway, SC 29526) or through our donation link below. Names must be appropriate.

(If you are looking for clinic services, you must schedule an appointment).

NEW YEAR, NEW PET PARTNERS

Meet Chinny, our Pet of the Day.

Chinny is a 3-year-old blue and white terrier, who has been in ACC care for 338 days. She gets along with other large dogs and is not fond of smaller animals. We recommend a home with older children (if any) and lots of exercise.

With Chinny is Horry County Police Department's Lt. Crystal Buckingham, the executive director of the Animal Care Center.

Lt. Buckingham has been in law enforcement for 18 years, spending time with the training, beach patrol, street crimes, and patrol units. Since coming to the shelter, Lt. Buckingham has noticed how the ACC staff serve with a genuine purpose.

"They work really hard to come up with creative ways to meet the needs of the animals," she said.

Want to meet Chinny or any of our other adoptables? Visit the ACC (1923 Industrial Park Rd., Conway, SC 29526). We are open today, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with an hour closure at 12:30 p.m.).

IS YOUR PET LOST?

If you pet is lost, got away from you, or missing, there are a few ways the ACC (and the community!) can help.

- Post a picture of your pet and where you last saw them on social media. This includes community and neighborhood groups, Nextdoor, the Ring Doorbell app, and groups like 'Lost Pets of Horry/Georgetown Countys'.

- File a lost pet report on the ACC website, by clicking 'Report a Lost Pet'. Include a photo, identifiable information about your pet, and your contact information.
- Ensure your pet's microchip is up to date! If your pet is microchipped, log onto the microchip website and ensure your contact information is correct.

- If a stray animal is picked up by Horry County Police Department Environmental Officers, we will post them to our website under ‘Stray Intake Pets’. Stray pets are held for reclamation 5 days at the Animal Care Center.
- If a pet is brought to our facility and microchipped, we will contact the owner listed on the microchip.

(Be aware of potential bad actors. If you believe you are being scammed, reach out to your local police precinct.)

HOOF CARE

There aren't just cats and dogs in Horry County - hooved pets, like horses, mules, cattle, and pigs, also live in the area.

Proper hoof care is one way to ensure a large animal stays healthy.

When it comes to proper care, consider the genetics, development, environment, movement, and exercise of the hooved animal. Diet, injury, and your expectations of the animal are also important.

Under Horry County ordinance, owners of hooved animals must provide adequate veterinary care, including preventative teeth and hoof care, as recommended by a veterinarian and/or farrier.

MICROCHIP MONDAY

Microchipping is a quick and easy way to ensure your pets are identifiable and can get back to you sooner if lost.

When an animal comes to the ACC, it is scanned for a microchip. If the animal is microchipped, ACC staff will contact the owner listed on the chip.

It’s important to keep the microchip up to date, including your name, contact information, and the pet’s name. Take some time today to make sure your pet's microchip is up to date.

The best reason to have your pet microchipped is the improved chance that you will get your pet back if it is lost or stolen.

The ACC offers microchipping and QR code tags to help get pets back home. Call or visit us for more information.
