Here are some tips for brushing your dog:
Start at the same place
Begin at the bottom of your dog's back legs and work your way up, brushing one side at a time.
Brush in the direction of hair growth
Use firm strokes to remove dead hair.
Get to the skin
Brushing from the skin out is important, especially for dogs with double coats.
Use the right tools
The type of brush you use depends on your dog's coat. For example, you can use a bristle brush for short to medium coats, a slicker brush for double coats, or a comb or rake for other coats.
Use other tools
You can also use a shedding blade to remove dead hair, an undercoat rake for longer double coats, or an undercoat dematting comb for heavier tangles.
Focus on key areas
Pay special attention to your dog's ears, legs, tail, and areas where their collar or harness sits.
Make it a positive experience
Try giving your dog treats as you brush, and introduce brushing slowly with lots of positive reinforcement if your dog is apprehensive.
Avoid bathing before brushing
Wetting your dog can make matting worse, so brush them before you bathe them.
