PET SAFETY REMINDER: Remember that asphalt (and concrete) gets HOT during the summer and can cause burns to pets’ feet. On a 77-degree day asphalt temps have measured as high as 125 degrees – and on an 87-degree day as high as 143 degrees (it’s already 88 today in central Iowa and temps are climbing, so even more dangerous)! Skin destruction can occur in as little as 1 minute on a 125-degree surface. To keep your pet safe, press the back of your hand firmly against the asphalt (or concrete) for 7 seconds before walking your dog on it. If it’s not comfortable for you, it could potentially harm your pup. Even better, walk your dog in the grass to not even risk paw damage.

If you’re aware of someone feeding or caring for a feral colony in your area -- and those cats are NOT spayed or neutered-- there’s a good chance the caregiver either doesn’t realize the importance of TNR (trap, neuter, return) or doesn’t have the financial means to provide full veterinary care for all the cats. They may not be aware that there is often assistance (low-cost spay/neuter) available! It's disappointing, but most people have never even heard of TNR.

Please do your best to educate those who are simply trying to help the cats for the benefit of the cats and all who live around them. 🐾

This still applies today! Owners, please try to remember that even if YOUR dog is friendly, other dogs may not be or may need space for other reasons or other special needs. Also, other dog owners may not want another dog around them uninvited. Please ask if you may approach another owner with an animal so that there is mutual consent to approach one another.

Definitely clean their bowls daily. How would you like to eat food off of a dirty plate. Germs and bacteria, dust, and hair can all collect on these dishes if they are not cleaned. Plus dirty dishes attract ants and other bugs. Keep them clean and limit potential avoidable health issues.

The state of your pet’s feeding and drinking dishes play a crucial role in their overall health. Dirty bowls are a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Wash and scrub their water and food dishes with hot soapy water. Running them through the dishwasher's hottest cycle to get them clean and sanitized is even more effective.

Please feed your dogs wisely and only foods they can digest!

Sweet corn season is here! I know it’s tempting to let your dogs chew on the cobs when you get done with them. But please resist the temptation!! it is never a good idea, no matter how many times you’ve done it before or how bad the dog wants it! Corn cobs can only be digested by ruminants! Dogs do not have the capability to digest them. They are a huge risk to plug up your dog’s digestive system. They can cause them to become very ill, and sometimes to need surgery to relieve the obstruction. Save yourself some heartache and some money and don’t let your dog have corn cobs!!

A friendly reminder, that if need to set off fireworks, go ahead but use only legal ones and maybe for a short period of time. If you have animals, keep them in a safe place so that they cannot escape. Maybe put some music on and a tight shirt (thunder shirt) to help with their anxiety. Just protect them as much as possible.

Are you prepared for a possible pet injury? This is a good idea!

Do you have a first-aid kit prepared for your pet? A few items that we recommend to always have on hand are gauze pads, adhesive tape, cotton balls, tweezers, oral syringe, a towel, and a card with your phone number and your pet’s name, hospital name and address, and your veterinarian. You can never be too cautious!
