Feline Fact Friday ...

Did you know ... A litter of kittens can have multiple fathers ⁉️

This time of year is usually spent gathering kittens and securing the mama cat because it's more obvious to everyone that she and her kittens need help. 🚩But let's not forget those male cats.

*Female cats release several eggs per ovulation, and these eggs are released after she mates. All of the female cat’s eggs are released at the same time and survive for 24 hours. Therefore, if she mates with several males, each egg has the potential to be fertilized by any of their s***m (superfecundation).*

πŸ’” These tomcats are simply doing what comes naturally - But the life of an unneutered tom is HARSH. While following their instincts to breed, their life is riddled with fights, disease, injuries, and danger.

Be kind to your male feline and have him fixed for a safer life!

Thank you .

You may have heard the expression β€œnature abhors a vacuum.” It refers to the phenomenon that when a space is emptied, nature will fill it. Once you understand this reality, you’ll know why killing cats (or otherwise removing them) from a given location is doomed to fail.

Understanding the Vacuum Effect is vital to saving lives. For cats who live outdoors, it is literally a matter of life and death.

So what exactly is the Vacuum Effect?

β€œ[E]ach animal has their territory, they have their space. So when you remove them from that space, that allows somebody else to move in and thrive, because obviously, that animal was thriving there, which is why they were reproducing so much. So now that space that's probably plentiful with a warm spot to sleep, food and water is now available, there's free real estate there, somebody else can move in and start doing the same thing. . .[But] by going in and preventing them from reproducing, they still maintain that territory; they don't allow another animal to move in and start taking over. But they can live out their life, just the way that they were living before happy and content." (Marshall, Amber. Interview. By Diviya Roney, 26 April 2022).

Cat owners (often first time, inexperienced) tell me since their cat will be indoors only, they don't plan to have him/her spayed/neutered. I've heard/seen it play out countless times, when a female cat goes into heat the owner will literally be physically unable to keep her inside. The cat's yowling, destructive behavior (clawing at doors and windows) and waiting by doors for the first opportunity to bolt out faster than anyone can possibly grab her will make her victorious. Same for males. Their sense of smell is 100K times more sensitive than humans' and they will be forced by their raging hormones to find the females (up to 5 miles away) in need of what they have to offer. No excuses, GET YOUR CAT(S) SPAYED/NEUTERED!!

06/19/2024

This is one (of the 200) reasons to get your male cat neutered. Mating is not a pleasant experience for the female and sparing her any hook up will be to her benefit. One male can be responsible for 2500 kittens every year & we all cringe at the sound of males fighting over territory or females. Then there's the injuries they sustain during those fights. That's if they don't get hit on the road while searching for females. Give them all a break and get them spayed and neutered. πŸ˜ΈπŸ’•

06/19/2024

Male cats who are neutered are less likely to fight and defend their territories.

Diseases are less likely to be spread, and fewer injuries will happen because they aren’t fighting, which leads to much happier and healthier male cats.

Make sure all male cats are so they aren't beat up, injured, & suffering.

06/19/2024

With Father's Day approaching, we will be highlighting why neutering any male cat is so important!

An unneutered male can cause A LOT of kittens; not to mention they're more apt to fight other males, and often, this is how FIV or FeLV is spread.

06/19/2024

We appreciate people wanting to help kittens get to safety, but if you're helping kittens (best time to rescue kittens is around 5 weeks), make sure you are also helping the adult community cats get spayed/neutered or kittens will continue to appear OVER and OVER again.

When kittens are scooped up without a mom, she goes into heat fairly quickly and will have another litter in 2 months. It is vital to stop the cycle of nonstop littering and to get mom cat spayed to end the cycle of breeding!
