We love Zilla!!!

Transformation Tuesday brings a wagging success story! 🐾✨ Remember Zilla, our superstar on the Whole Dog Purification (WDP) journey? Well, we promised an update, and here it is—prepare to be amazed!

About two weeks ago, we kicked off Zilla’s WDP to recapture her youth, reduce inflammation, and rescue her function. And guess what? Within just a week, Zilla’s spark was back in action! Her beautiful color returned and is still getting better by the day. Look at that face—engaged, intense, and oh-so-happy! 😍

Zilla’s transformation is a testament to the incredible potential of targeted holistic care. She’s not recapturing her old self; she’s thriving! Keep Archie in your thoughts and prayers! 💗

Even during our fiesta week, we share a story that touches our hearts deeply. Meet Archie, our brave Boston Terrier, who will turn 3 in August. 🎂🐾 Archie is battling a rare genetic condition, called Mucopolysaccharidosis 1 (MPS-1) that causes an abnormal build-up of sugars in his cells, leading to a degenerative struggle.

Here's Archie, captured in our cushy client chair, cocking his head as if to ask, 'What’s next?' This poignant moment shows not just his adorable face but his attentive and fighting spirit, ready to tackle the next steps in his treatment.

Archie's dad is fully committed to giving him the best life possible, and together with the awesome 'neuro gods,' who are managing his pain and seizures, we’ve embarked on a tailored treatment regimen. We’ve adjusted his diet to optimize cellular function and minimize the buildup of harmful sugars. Additionally, we’re employing photobiomodulation to bolster mitochondrial health and adjust gene expression, along with PEMF technology to enhance microcirculation and further support mitochondrial function.

Archie’s path is one of gentle, precise steps. Furbaby Fact Friday 🤓
Did you know that Medium chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD or MCAD deficiency) is a rare inherited metabolic condition that affects the body's ability to convert a certain type of fat into energy. It's a big deal in Cavaliers, y'all, because there is coconut, palm or kernel oil in about everything these days. (I must confess that I use coconut oil in specific patients, so this interests me greatly!) The signs of MCADD include:
👉 Seizures
👉 Lethargy
👉 Episodic illness
👉 Unsteady gait
👉 Loss of appetite
👉 Low blood sugar
👉 Abnormal behavior
👉 Respiratory distress
👉 Recurrent infections
👉 Neurological Symptoms

Notice how many of these are general symptoms and easily mistaken for other things?? This disease was recently identified and many vets may not know about it. Knowledge is power, though. Thankfully there is a great genetic test that EVERY Cavalier should have! If you have a precious Cav, test for this asap!

❗️CONSUMER ALERT: PURINA PET FOODS ❗️
If you are feeding Purina, it would be advisable to change diets until we can be assured that they are safe. We have been monitoring reports in recent weeks that pets have become very sick and some have died on a variety of Purina products. While there is no "official" statement about this, it is important to act now to keep your baby safe. If you remember the Hill's diet recall in 2019, Hill's waited to make a statement until 6 months into the issue and many pets died. Please don't wait for your fur baby to get sick as it may be too late.

I am not a fan of Purina.... or any ultraprocessed pet food for that matter... because I KNOW how it is made and what is actually in these diets despite the clever marketing. My clients simply don't use Purina. However, when it comes to Big Food and Big Pharma, we have to support one another and protect our own. While they fight for profit, we fight for health.

If you dog becomes sick, please DO NOT wait to seek treatment. Also, DO NOT turn over all of that food to Purina when you report it. Submit at least part of the food to CheckYourPetFood (an independent lab) to be tested. This ensures accountability. This website also provides a link to file a FDA complaint about Purina. I think we have seen enough of corporations guarding their profit and not disclosing critical information to consumers.

Also consider keeping a close eye on the processed pet food industry through Susan Thixton’s site, Truth About Pet Food. (I’ll put links in the comments.) Susan is a former regulator and was on the board of AAFCO in years past. She fights for our furry friends.

Wellness Wednesday 👩‍⚕️

Have you noticed the disconnect in medicine these days? It seems to be happening in the vet world as well, as corporations take over the practice of veterinary medicine. I hear from my clients that the compassion is waning, as well as the attention to detail. This is the post-COVID world, my friends.

This mean YOU have to be the advocate for your pet more than ever. New drugs are being released and guess what? If a pet is not being diagnosed appropriately, these drugs can have nasty consequences. It's time to put on your thinking cap and research before you agree to use a new drug. My advice if your pet's condition is not emergent:
🐾 Politely ask for more information and time to consider the option.
🐾 Remember that if a drug is injected, then you cannot get it back.
🐾 Find yourself a holistic vet to be a part of your vet team to help guide you.
🐾 Be discerning & participate in your pet's health care!

We will trickle out some information on a few of these newer problematic drugs in the coming weeks.

Totally worth the read!!

Fun fact: Dogs are rarely deciding to be "Stubborn" by being disobedient.

They either:
1) are not in a mental state to process information
2) do not have a clear understanding of their boundaries, communication or training
3) do not have the motivation to participate with their human versus external motivation. AKA: they are simply choosing a more desirable -to them- option.

Option 1: We wouldn't say a child excited about heading to Disneyland was stubborn -we'd say they were excited.

Or we wouldn't say a man pacing the hospital hallways waiting for news of his wife's surgery was stubborn -when the more polite version would be sitting in a chair-. We'd say he was anxious.

Option 2: We wouldn't say a tourist was being stubborn when they said "bread" instead of "bathroom" -we would say they had a gap in their language comprehension.

Or we wouldn't say a gymnast trying to nail a flip was being stubborn when she was failing to land the landing. We'd say she was still training that skill. (She would however be stubborn for continuing to train through failure -but the failure itself isn't being stubborn.)

Option C. We wouldn't label someone who would rather play outside than play the piano stubborn -we'd say they would much rather play outside than play piano. Same with the person who would rather play piano than go outside!

We wouldn't say the person playing on their phone instead of listening to a lecture was stubborn -they were distracted! Or bored of their lecture.

Excited, Anxious, Language Barriers, Still Training, Reward or Activity Preferences, Distracted, Bored -those are all things we can effectively train against!

That doesn't mean Stubborn doesn't exist -you can see it existed in one of the above examples, just not how we first envisioned it-, it just means the vast majority of the time, it's not stubbornness at all.

Some dogs are harder to train, motivate or place boundaries on than others, (and so are a lot of people!).

So next time you look at your dog as stubborn, look at the list above -what's your real problem?
