Happy Super Sunday! Hope everyone has some responsible fun today. Remember, you aren’t the only ones on the road, other people’s children are, and possibly your own, so plan accordingly.
Now for the not so fun stuff.
2025 has been crazy. Something many people know is shelters and rescues are full. With that, parents who would otherwise surrender for various reasons, are resorting to abandonment. This means at boarding, tied to benches, simply letting them loose, or with a temporary foster. We get it. Times are pretty rough for many families. Whether it’s a change that wasn’t anticipated, financial, or health, some things can’t be avoided. BUT, here’s the thing: as much as we adore our time with them, we cannot take on your pets as fosters. We can try to help promote them if needed, but we aren’t set up to support an abundance of fosters, try to find them homes, and meet the plethora of potential new families. We are a small business.
We work with wonderful rescues who do everything in their power to help, but in the end many rescues avoid owner surrenders and stick with pets on the euthanasia list, neglect cases, or medical necessity. These are the animals that really need time and voices for them. While moving, a baby, etc are things that should be planned into pet ownership, with YOU being their voice.
Just this month we have had a pup abandoned at boarding, another unfortunate situation with a pack of dogs that may be upended due to tragedy in their family, and still many requests for us to step in to foster.
For us, we cannot foster unless the pet is sponsored by a rescue. That is how we are set up. One day we would like to say yes to every dog that’s found, abandoned, or in need of us, but at this moment we are not set up with the resources of a rescue, so we focus on giving them their best life and letting the pros be our bosses.
The harsh reality is there are no resources. Funds are hard to come by for these rescues. Man power, and even community support are less than a priority. Vets require a responsible party to sign a financial responsibility waiver just to see an animal, which causes them to reach out to the rescue just as much as individuals. They are slammed and giving it their best. Are they bougie high end accommodations? Not usually. But are they loving, supportive, nurturing, places? Very much so, and that’s all they need. Every rescue we support does a $5 Friday. That’s less than your Dutch Bros for the day and makes a difference to them in a lasting way, unlike that caffeine fix and sugar high.
Back to the point: when you choose to board with us we do everything we can to create a wonderful vacation for the pups, but in the end they need to come home with you. If you need an extra week, or month to find a better situation, communicate that with us. That’s a lot better than just ghosting, which is what we have been dealing with.
We hope no one ever finds themself in that situation, but we wouldn’t judge you if you were. We just need the truth and a real conversation to find a solution that isn’t abandoning them, the shelter, or a rescue.
Please do your part for your animal, your community, and your family.
