Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the heroes who bravely responded that day. Among them were the courageous dogs who worked tirelessly to search for survivors and guide people to safety.
One of those heroes was Sirius, a Port Authority Police Department K-9, who was in the World Trade Center's South Tower with his handler, Lt. David Lim. When the building trembled, Lim secured Sirius in his kennel before going to assist others, telling him, "I'll be back for you." Sadly, Sirius didn’t survive the collapse, but his remains were found in 2002 and given a full honor guard, a fitting tribute for his service.
Alongside Sirius were guide dogs like Roselle and Salty, who helped their owners navigate through chaos to safety. These dogs, along with the search-and-rescue teams, displayed remarkable bravery and loyalty during one of the darkest moments in history.
To every rescue dog that served on 9/11—you were all good boys and girls, and your dedication will forever be remembered. Thank you for your service. 🐾
