Since our pets can't brush their own teeth, it's up to us to create a good plan of regular examinations and cleanings to keep them as healthy as possible. Bad breath in a dog or cat is more than just unpleasant, it can also be a sign of serious dental or periodontal disease. By the time they are 3-5 years old, 60-70% of dogs and cats have some degree of tartar, plaque buildup, or periodontal disease (inflammation of the gums and the structures which support the teeth). Beyond the cosmetic appearance of brown/beige tartar and red gums, pets with actual periodontal disease frequently also have bacterial gingivitis which can damage other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. The bacteria from the gums can travel via the bloodstream to these organs and cause serious, permanent damage.
