GARDEN RULES
1) We have fun – everything GROWs better that way!
2) We wear closed toe shoes – we garden without chemical pesticides, so this keeps the creepy crawlies off our feet.
3) We are kind to others – this is a community garden and we want everyone to feel safe and happy in their community.
4) We put away all our tools – this helps our tools last longer and our visitors stay safe.
5) We stay on designated paths – This helps keep our seedlings from being stepped on and our big plants from getting broken limbs.
6) We respect the wildlife – we have earthworms, birds, bees, butterflies, ladybugs and many other natural friends that live here and help our garden grow.
7) We sing, laugh, joke, giggle, smile, and all those other happy things – basically we turn that frown upside down and remember rule #1!

Hello to all! The past week has been eventful and productive. We would like to provide and update on the status of Tom Graham Park...

As of current we are working with the Parks and Recreation department on a solution and renewal of a new lease agreement!!

There has been a large amount of confusion dealing with the status of the Garden and communication within the community on the situation. We would like to emphasis that parks and rec never intended to "take the park away from us" although they had some concerns with maintenance of the park that they expressed to us.

In conjunction with the ending of our 5 year lease agreement that ended last year plus some miscommunication of time frames we decided to have a formal meeting with them to discuss the details.

We collected Letters of support from multiple organizations and received over 30 persuasive letters from our students at CC-Montessori school to aid in the discussion.

As of last Friday the garden is safe and we are working towards a new chapter where we will work together with Parks and Rec to make the space even better for the community!!

Stay tuned for updates on upcoming workdays and opportunities to provide support!!

Last week we began prepping our new sensory zone and getting ready to plant in the garden! 🌻

This week we have been harvesting Thai Blue Peas to make color changing lemonade!

The big garden is looking nice and green just needs some weeding. Field trips resume to Keepers in a few weeks. Our students are exited to return as are we!

Early Saturday morning we visited CC-Montessori School to help with a parent workday! 🌞⚒️

In our Outdoor Classroom there was this old "tiny house" that was originally going to be used for a mini plant nursery for students to use. Over the years it has degraded and needed removal.

Thanks to an awesome team of parent volunteers and our PTO president we were able to get it dissembled safety while saving any good lumber we could salvage for future projects.

Now we have more space for raised garden beds and plants!! Not to mention more space for our students (and chickens 🌱😎🐔)

Very productive Saturday! Stay tuned for updates coming soon as we share our new developments and plans for using the grant money we recently received from

If you are interested in having your child attend our school, please schedule a visit and come take a tour!

The past few weeks in the garden... Thanks to the rain and awesome volunteers we have plenty of fresh fruits and veggies to share with our local community!

These are just a few snapshots of our neighbors visiting the garden to learn about sustainability and harvesting.

As the extreme temperatures set in we continue to watch our urban garden shift into summer mode and production slows down. We tend to take a break in the summer with events and workshops as the harsh weather takes a toll on us and the plants.

You will still find us out in the garden maintaining and watering. Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to join us! 🌿😎🍅🌞🫑🌾

Last weekend we had a busy day, learning how to take soil samples for heavy metals testing!

Huge thanks to and Department of Plant and Soil science for making this happen!

Over the next month the samples will make their way to the labs at the department of plant and soil science at Texas Tech. Samples will eventually be analyzed for heavy metals.

The information provided will be shared on our website for public viewing. We are interested in collecting as much data as possible so we can learn and improve the health of our soil!

Thanks to the initiatives put forth by For the Greater Good, we were just one of a many local city parks and community food forest to have samples analyzed.

Stay tuned for updates!
Thanks again to the groups above for this insightful opportunity! Looking forward to future organics testing to learn even more about the life within our soils.

As we enter 2023 and continue through the Winter this is a great time to prepare and replant for Spring! Although we were set back a bit with the freezing Temps, we look forward to spring to bring us regrowth and new starts!

Freezing Temps may be frustrating but allows for us to learn and adapt to our surrounds so we can become more resilient as we move forward.

If you would like to support us feel free to "Adopt a Plant" and donate to our spring growth! We also have volunteer hours every Sunday 4-6pm.

Last week we were exited to resume our monthly Learning Garden field trips with !

Teachers and students discovered lots of neat foods to harvest, eat and take home including roselle hibiscus, peppers of all sorts, asian long beans and pomegranates! Our new garden friend (kitten in picture) joined in for all the action! 🐱🌿

Not only did we work on garden tasks like planting, mulching and pruning but also learned a few lessons including plant identification and scientific classification of living things.

Can't wait for the next one! Big thanks to CC-Montessori for bringing some life back to the garden!

Stay tuned for upcoming events and seasonal goods, now that Fall Temps have officially arrived! 🍁👍🏽🍂😎🌿

With all the recent rain 🌧️ life returns in the garden and sure is growing wild! We are thankful and looking forward to our active fall season upon us. 👍🏽🌱🍂

Check out all the mushrooms growing! 🍄No identification prepared as mushrooms can take some time to properly identify. But they are still pretty neat and provide some insight on the biodiversity happening in the soil!

We spread tons of mulch around our plants and in our walking rows. This typically creates a great environment for fungi and other decomposers looking for organic material to break down! 🪱🪳🪲

Other pictures include recent prep and planting. We are still sowing late summer crops like asian beans, Amaranth, flowers and herbs but also begining buffer crops as in beans and radish as well as cool weather crops like roots, brassicas and hardy greens! 🌿

Lots of weeds, tall grass and mosquitoes to work through but well worth the battle! We will have a big cleanup day coming up if you would like to contribute 😁🐝

Stay tuned for workshops and open hours to begin for the fall season!🌻🌾

Great day yesterday with for their annual Living Local Camp!

This year we planted some late summer crops like pumpkins, long beans, assorted herbs and more!

We learned about sustainable gardening, how to process Amaranth grain, and some go to cooking tips! Not to mention we collected a bunch of seeds to plant all over town. Time for some Guerrilla Gardening!

Although we still lack rain we spent some time observing some awesome crops that have made it through the extreme heat and dry summer!

Always a great time when Youth Odyssey comes around. Despite the heat the participants stayed out the first half of the day planting, harvesting and learning about local flora & fauna.

Thanks y'all! We look forward to next time.

In celebration of Juneteenth, let us reflect on the abundance of COLOR in the garden!

Despite the mega drought we find ourselves in here in South Texas, we find some plants that do not mind the heat and some dry weather! Despite the hardships we continue to GROW and RECONNECT with our ROOTS!

Zucca gourds, blue cream berry Tomatoes, Amaranth, Yucca and other natives doing well.

Not to mention our pollinators and other beneficial bugs we find on the daily in our Learning Graden 😁 Gulf Fritillary and a wolf spider.

As summer approaches we appreciate what growth we have and what's to come!

Stay tuned for our annual Frida Fest coming in July! As well as other opportunities to help out in the garden.

Our Story

Our mission is to cultivate a safe space for educating and advocating in a garden that benefits our surrounding neighbors and the community at large. We are growing sustainable, affordable, diverse, and organically grown produce, developing a learning space that promotes cohesive community, physical health and a healthy local economy. At the Learning Garden, everyone can learn how to plant, grow and harvest fresh produce and integrate the value of local food into their daily lives, alongside experienced growers. The Learning Garden is located in Corpus Christi, TX, at 3808 Up River Road.
