Mission Statement
Akita Rescue of Northwestern Pennsylvania is dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of abandoned, and neglected Akitas in northwestern Pennsylvania. We believe the best place for the Akita is in its home and we strive to keep them there rather than being surrendered. We will help with dog food and impound fees to keep dogs in their home. Everyday pets are surrendered due to owners who have become unable to care for their pet. With our food assistance program, we help your pet (regardless of breed) stay home and out of the shelter.
We are committed to:
* Saving Akitas from euthanasia: We work with shelters and animal control agencies to rescue Akitas at risk of being euthanized. We are strictly foster based. We do not utilize boarding facilities.
* Finding forever homes: We match our rescued Akitas with compatible families who can provide them with the love, care, and training they need to thrive.
* Educating the community: We educate the public about the unique needs and characteristics of Akitas to promote responsible ownership and prevent future surrenders.
* We however, do not intake Akitas with bite histories.
Guiding Principles
* Compassion: We treat all animals with compassion and respect.
* Integrity: We operate with honesty and transparency in all our activities.
* Stewardship: We are responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us.
* Collaboration: We work collaboratively with shelters, and animal control agencies to achieve our shared goals.
* Advocacy: We advocate for the welfare of Akitas through education, outreach, and legislative efforts.
* Community: We also help pets in need (food, medical, lost and found) in our local community regardless of breed or type of pet.
* International Akita Outreach: We also offer help internationally in selected areas.
Together, we can make a difference in the lives of Akitas in northwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.

Hachi is a 2 1/2 year old neutered male Akita. He was brought to the shelter as a stray almost 1 year ago. No owner has ever come to claim him. Hachi bonds hard to his person and can be very protective. To those he trusts Hachi is very sweet and playful. He knows sit and paw, and loves his squeaky toys. Because Hachi has been at the shelter for so long he needs time to warm up to strangers but will reward with absolute loyalty once he trusts. Hachi needs a home with one or two experienced people he can bond with. He is not a fan of children or cats, but may be ok with another dog that will allow him to be the dominant one. Hachi is currently at the Atlantic County Animal Shelter in Pleasantville, NJ.Co

I rescued Bella from this shelter so please share this to all you know in Connecticut

We are heartbroken that Vienna still hasn’t been found. We are praying every day that everyone is still actively searching for her and that she hasn’t been forgotten.
We can’t imagine how her new family must feel having lost her after falling in love with her. Please, if you live in or near Connecticut, please keep an eye out for her. She was spotted multiple times when she got out, but there’s many wooded areas where she was. Miracles happen every day.❤️
