This is a good read for all of us with older horses.

Winter can be tough on the oldest member of the herd; the article below offers a few valuable tips to keep your older horses happy and healthy through the cold weather season courtesy of our friends at Equus Magazine and AAEP member Dr. David Trachtenberg:https://equusmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2022/11/REV-EQ_EXTRA-VOL76-Winter-Care_fnlp.pdf

In particular, Dr. Trachtenberg recommends focusing on the two areas of winter management that can have the biggest influence on the health of older horses—feeding and blanketing.

We are going to be CLOSED next week (August 8-12). If you need food or medications PLEASE get them this week and make sure your first aid kits are stocked up. No one will be available to answer phone calls or emails.

If you have an emergency during this time you will need to try calling one of the other local vets (try the others in Cortez, Dolores, Mancos, and there are several mobile vets), and you may need to branch out to Durango, Bayfield or even Farmington, NM. There is a 24/7 ER clinic for small animal at the VCA Hospital in Albuquerque, NM (505-292-5353), there is a night-time/weekend ER clinic for small animal in Grand Junction (970-230-7382) and for horses there is an emergency clinic in Sante Fe, NM (Thal Equine 505-438-6590), Glenwood Springs, CO (Roaring Fork Equine 970-987-4757) or Cave Creek, AZ (Cave Creek Equine 623-581-5508).

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected in wild geese and ducks in Montezuma County.
• There is little risk to humans. However, do not handle sick or deceased birds.
• HPAI can be spread from wild populations to backyard chicken flocks through bird droppings. If you have been around wild birds (ponds, parks, etc) you must disinfect yourself, your shoes, and your clothing before coming in contact with your domestic birds. (To disinfect shoes, first remove droppings with a brush and water. Spray shoes with disinfectant solution of 1:10 bleach and water. Leave shoes in direct sunlight.)
• Please report sick or deceased wild birds to Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 303-297-1192.
• For more information, visit https://montezumacounty.org/csu-extension/ or https://ag.colorado.gov/animals/reportable-diseases/avian-influenza
