Pearl loves her mares, which is evident with the amount of time she spends outside with Kiko’s herd. 😂

Let’s talk over-blanketing.

It’s far too common, especially at this time of year and the start of spring.

It’s currently 20° Celcius out and I have driven by several properties where horses are blanketed in rain sheets.

I am currently WARM in a T-shirt and I’m not a 1000lb block of solid muscle like a horse is.

Horses are VERY efficient at retaining heat.

They’re a lot LESS efficient at dissipating heat.

So, really, we should be far more worried about their health and safety when working them in hot temperatures or keeping them in hot climates.

But the horse industry seems to have extreme blanketing anxiety, to the point where it seems far more common for horse owners to worry about horses getting too cold than too hot.

If the time of year is such that the temperatures are changing drastically from morning to afternoon, you’re probably better off leaving your horse naked unless they’re clipped or emaciated.

In which case, if you’re going to blanket them, you MUST be able to commit to taking it off as soon as it’s warm.

Just because it’s cloudy or a little rainy doesn’t mean your horse will be too cold without a blanket on.

The risk of them getting too hot is very real and unlike us, they don’t have the privilege of just removing layers when they’re too hot.

On the flip side, if they’re naked and too cold, they can warm themselves quite efficiently with movement or simply from the process of digesting the hay they eat.

They can also erect their hairs as needed to create more warmth.

Something I can promise all horse owners is this:

Unless your horse is clipped or has some type of pre-existing condition, odds are they are fine naked, especially in fall and spring temperatures.

And EVEN if they are clipped, 20 degrees CELCIUS is still too hot to be in a rain sheet.

Normalize an understanding of how efficient horses are at staying warm.

Normalize the fact that we should, generally speaking, be way more concerned about them being too hot than too cold.

Because, let’s be for real, the temperatures a lot of horses are out in direct sunlight competing in strenuous competition are often times a lot more damaging to health than being naked in a little bit of rain would be.

Odds are your horse is just fine being naked in mild temps. In fact, they’re probably happier.

Best friends💕 Come out and meet her!

What barn is complete without a pig?? Introducing Miss Pearl! Pearl is from a rescue situation and fits into the barn perfectly. She’s now the first one to greet you at the door and will gladly follow you around looking for any scraps that may have fallen on the floor (in a true pig fashion). She’s also become fast friends with Apache the barn dog and McFlurry the barn cat (McFlurry is not as enthusiastic about the new friend).
