Mellow Dogs

Mellow Dogs I offer private, in home sessions in the Portland, Salem, Bend, and Eugene areas, as well as the rest of the Willamette Valley and along the Oregon coast.

Virtual sessions available everywhere. Being a Mellow Dog doesn’t mean your dog won’t be energetic. The purpose of my assistance is to help reduce unnecessary stress in our companion animals so that they can be their best selves. Learning to notice when our dogs are stressed and respond accordingly helps them to deal with that stress appropriately, and hopefully avoid behaviors that are considered

problematic. We all want our dogs to be happy and content. Yet so often the means used to achieve contentment result in the opposite, a stressed out unhappy dog, which results in stressed out, unhappy owners. My goal is to help owners understand their dog so that they can ascertain what their dog needs, meet that need, and help the dog to make different choices. Services: I offer private, in home sessions in the Portland, Salem, and Eugene areas, as well as the rest of the Willamette Valley and along the Oregon coast. If you’re in Oregon and are interested in my services, contact me to determine if in-home sessions are available to you. Virtual sessions are available regardless of your location. In order to schedule a session, please call 541-224-5293 or email [email protected]. Please subscribe to my newsletter for updates, and be sure to follow Mellow Dogs on Instagram and Facebook. Methods: I subscribe to the Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) principles in helping with animal behavior. To do this, I am constantly learning to provide research based assistance to my clients, while adhering to these principles. Sessions with me may look very different from what you are expecting or have experienced in the past. I do not “train” dogs so much as help them relax so they can make better choices. I do this by helping the humans in their lives to help them on this journey.

A dog’s purpose… Humans have bred dogs for various traits. These traits are embedded in their genes, and part of the antecedents that contribute to how a dog acts. This Jack Russell was bred to hunt rats and squirrels. When the stable owner where I keep my horses told me she needed a terrier because the barn is overrun, well… two birds with one stone!

Letting go of an agenda can be exactly what our dogs need.

Even when someone is using L.I.M.A. methods and avoiding aversives, it can still be aversive to a dog when we have an agenda in determining how the dog is supposed to behave.

This is Mia. She was saved a half an hour before euthanasia by people who didn’t understand her fear. Eight months after taking her in as a foster, understanding and helping her work through her fear, she is a happy and contented dog. She likes hanging with the dog gang. Hopefully we can find her a forever home.

"Dominance theory has shut off scientific research and has crept into medicine to the point where we think we can do things to animals whereby we are asking them to ‘submit’....dominance theory is insidious and has crept into everything we do with dogs and it’s wrong. It has gotten in the way of modern science and I’ve just about had it. Every single thing we do with dogs hurts them because we don’t see them as individuals or cognitive partners." Dr. Karen Overall, 2016.

The "Alpha" dog theory and "dominance" theory are both based on flawed assumptions. It's time to erase these concepts from the public sphere.

Exerting "dominance" over your dog is the wrong way to build a good relationship. We debunk the alpha dog theory and show how to build a good relationship.
