Happy Friday! As we all know, we are experiencing some frigid temps and will throughout the weekend. Here are a few suggestions to help keep your animals comfortable while we tackle these negative degree days.
▪︎As most of you know, horses do well in the cold. Their hindgut is a massive fermentation vat and helps keep them warm, so our first recommendation is free choice hay.
▪︎Heated water
▪︎ Salt, to help increase the water intake
▪︎Shelter/Wind break.
The question of the year every year is always "Should I blanket?" That is something we believe is up to you to decide, but we do suggest considering blankets for old, thin, very young, or ill horses.
Hope everyone stays warm and just remember spring is around the corner ☀️And if you want to get out of these chilly temps, join us Saturday night (starts at 5 pm) at the Bitterroot Stockgrowers banquet at the Hamilton fairground where we get to celebrate Dr. Shawn Gleason, as he earns the lifetime achievement award! Great dinner, games, silent auction & live music.
We have had many calls asking questions about Pigeon Fever. There's been cases at the north end of the valley and here's some good information for those looking! Check out the link below ️⬇️

These are the key points from our lameness seminar:
Lameness in horses can be caused by many different things.
There is no standardized treatment for lameness in horses.
The best way to help manage a lameness is to have a diagnosis for the cause of the problem.
This involves performing an extensive lameness evaluation with or without nerve blocks (depending on the case) followed by diagnostics such as radiographs and ultrasound.
This approach allows us to answer many questions and focus our diagnostics and therapies on specific
areas.
Tammany offers quite a few therapies and medications to help manage lameness and tailored treatment plans for a horse and its intended use.
Some of the newer therapies include synthetic viscosupplements like Noltrex Polyacrylamide Gel. We also offer biologic regenerative therapies including Restigen (PRP) and Pro- Stride (autologous
conditioned serum). These products are aseptically processed from your horses own blood and injected
back into joints, tendons, and ligaments to help stimulate healing and manage arthritis by concentrating natural anti- inflammatory molecules present in your horse’s body.
We still offer conventional therapies including steroids, hyaluronic acid, and non- steroidal drugs along with suggestions for corrective podiatry including consults with farriers.
Managing lameness in horses can be very frustrating and confusing. A one size fits all approach does not
exist for keeping our horses going strong. While all of these newer products we offer can produce
amazing results, the success and response to treatment still depends on having an accurate diagnosis.
The lameness exam is the best first step in helping create a management plan tailored to your horse.
Thank you to all who attended!
