“This is the day we pay homage
to all those who didn’t come home..
it’s not a celebration,
it is a day of solemn contemplation
over the cost of freedom.”

We just wanted to write a quick message to let all our people know that we are no longer with Taos Mesa Animal Sanctuary. Although we fully support them, their board, staff and mission. We will continue promoting their events, and will be reposting their efforts to help animals in need. Between our fulltime jobs, our rescue efforts up north and the daily routine of running a rescue, we decided it was easier when we just took care of our areas of Questa and north. There just wasn't enough hours in the day for us to manage up here and our obligations south. We wanted to let our friends, family and donors know that the arrangement has ended. I am by no means saying don't donate to TMAS, they're doing great work. Just independently of us. We wish them all the luck and good fortune in the world.

If our name still says Taos Mesa Animal Sanctuary, it's because we are awaiting the admins to change it.

Yesterday, we welcomed a new member into our family, a delightful two-year-old who has spent the last 40 days waiting for a forever home at the local shelter. This morning marked a milestone in our journey together—the first time our furry friend ventured onto the couch. The moment was nothing short of magical.

As I watched her cautiously climb up and settle in, I couldn't help but marvel at the trust and love reflected in those bright, expressive eyes. It was as if she understood that this was the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with comfort and affection.

The couch, once just a piece of furniture, has now become a symbol of her acceptance into our lives. I'll always cherish the memory of how his little face lit up with recognition and joy when he first stepped into our home and claimed his spot on the couch. It's moments like these that remind us of the profound connection we share with our animal companions—they truly do sense and comprehend the world around them.

As she curled up and let out a contented sigh, I knew that this was more than just finding a pet; it was about giving a second chance to a soul that understands love just as deeply as we do. And I believe the picture captures this sentiment perfectly—animals indeed feel and understand everything.

Reminder that the Questa Farmers Market begins THIS Sunday! We have seen a lot of amazing community members doing amazing things to make personal impacts to assist with the homeless, abandoned and forgotten dogs of Taos County.

Thanks the the generous support of LOR Foundation, High Desert Hounds will have free dog food for anyone who needs it - whether for their own doggos or doggos that have found themselves without food. We will also be assisting people in signing up for and organizing transportation assistance to the spay and neuter clinic in El Prado.

We hope to see you there from 10 - 2!

In 2018,Taka was badly injured in a
house fire in Martinez, GA. He has deep scars on his
face and back, and large parts of his fur are burned off.
But that doesn't stop him from living a full life.

After Taka recovered, his owner, Chrystal Lesley,
enrolled him for training to become a therapy dog for
burn victims in a local burn center. Even though he is 9
years old, he was accepted.

"I'm very proud of him," she says. "He's a very good dog.'
