"HOT" TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER RIDING

As you prepare for fun in the sun with your favorite equine, make sure you understand how the combination of heat and humidity can take the fun part out the equation — and potentially even turn into a dangerous situation for your horse.

When riding in hot weather, remember to take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and for signs of heat exhaustion, as the situation can quickly escalate into heat stroke. If your horse looks hot and tired, it's time for a drink, a cold bath and a break in the shade.

Consult your veterinarian for more information, or learn more about the signs of heat stroke on our website at https://aaep.org/issue/heat-stroke

DO YOU HAVE A FIRE-PREVENTION STRATEGY FOR YOU BARN? 🔥

Barn fires are the number one local emergency expected to affect agricultural facilities, and they kill more horses than any other type of disaster. Before your mind jumps to unpreventable wildfires, however, you should know that experts in fire and arson investigations estimate that 80 – 85% of horse barn fires are caused by accidents, human error (e.g., open flame from smoking ci******es, welding next to combustible materials), or electrical malfunctions.

Strategies and equipment to mitigate the effects of barn fires are available and constantly being improved, but they are underutilized within the industry. If you are guilty of overlooking fire prevention for your barn, don’t wait for that gut wrenching whiff of smoke and fear -- consult your local fire department and your veterinarian today on the best ways to design a prevention plan, respond to a fire and remove horses from the barn.

If you are building a new barn, make sure your barn builder knows about National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 150, "Fire and Life Safety in Animal Housing Facilities Code." While no barn can truly be fire proof, build your barn out of the most non-combustible materials affordable to give your facility a better fighting chance.
