It used to be patriotic to raise backyard hens...what happened to us as a society that we are no longer allowed to raise our own food?

Help support the cause! Write to our Mayor and City Council members, tell them why it is important to you to be able to keep a limited number of hens (chicken or duck) in your backyard! Ducks and chickens provide so many benefits. Fresh eggs, natural free compost, educational opportunities for our children to learn about where their food comes from, the satisfaction of knowing that your family's eggs were sustainably and ethically raised...the list goes on and on!

Hello Cottage Grove!
I would like to see our wonderful city join along with almost every other city in the metro area and allow us to keep a limited number of female backyard chickens and/or ducks. I truly believe that urban/suburban farming is the way of the future, as more and more of us want to know where our food comes from and care about how it was raised.

This page is dedicated to open discussion about how to proceed with this goal. I firmly believe that a limited number of female ducks/chickens can be kept in such a way as to not impose on neighbors and still maintain the aesthetic appeal of a nicely kept yard.

I am trying to put together organized support for this issue. Please let me know if you support this cause, or what possible concerns may be. Even if you personally do not want backyard chickens or ducks, I bet you would not mind your neighbor occasionally donating some excess fresh eggs every once and a while!

The U of MN Extension has some great information to address common concerns about raising backyard chickens and ducks. Almost all of the concerns can be mitigated by responsible owners who take time to clean up waste in a timely manor (as any dog or cat owner would), promote hand washing, and build proper coops.
