It's almost the 4th of July! Make sure your pet has ID (collar tag and/or microchip) in case they do get lost. And please check in with your veterinarian as soon as possible if you think your pet may need anxiety support for the upcoming holiday. 🎆

Why Should You Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

For your female pets, spaying has the following benefits:

1. Spaying eliminates the risk of pyometra, a potentially fatal uterine infection.
Reduces breast cancer risk:
2. Spaying significantly decreases the chances of developing mammary tumors, which are cancerous in a large percentage of dogs and cats.
Eliminates risk of ovarian and uterine cancers:
3. Spaying ensures that the female pet will not develop these cancers.
Prevents unwanted pregnancies:
4. Spaying eliminates the possibility of pregnancy and the associated risks and responsibilities.

For your male pets, neutering has the following benefits:
1. Prevents testicular cancer: Neutering removes the testicles, eliminating the risk of testicular cancer.
2. Reduces prostate problems: Neutering helps prevent prostate enlargement and other prostate issues.
3. Reduces roaming and aggression: Neutering can help curb the urge to roam in search of a mate and reduce aggression towards other males.
4. Reduces urine marking: Neutering can reduce the tendency to mark territory with urine.

Overall Benefits for all pets:
1. Longer lifespan. Studies have shown that spayed and neutered pets tend to live longer than their intact counterparts according to Humane World for Animals.
2. Improved behavior. Spaying and neutering can lead to a more docile and manageable pet, as it reduces hormonal influences on behavior.
3. Reduced pet overpopulation. Spaying and neutering helps to control the pet population, reducing the number of homeless animals and euthanasia rates in shelters.

Chester, our spokescat, wants you to know that the Humane Society of Cottage Grove can help! If you need help funding the spay or neuter of your pets, come by our This and That Thrift Shop in Cottage Grove and find out about our Spay and Neuter Assistance Program.

Precautionary harmful algae advisories have been issued by Oregon Health Authority for Lost Creek Lake in Jackson County (where a dog was reported to have died), Prineville Reservoir in Crook County and Devil's Lake in Lincoln County. (Precautionary status means a bloom has been sighted and water sampling is unavailable within 1 business day due to limited resources.)

UPDATE: Since this post, additional warnings have been issued for: Lake Billy Chinook in Jefferson County (cyanotoxins are above recreational use values for human exposure which means they are too high for animal exposure as well) and Fern Ridge Reservoir in Lane County. The decision to issue the advisory for Fern Ridge is based on a report of a toxigenic bloom from a partner agency. Results of testing in the days to come will either confirm the advisory or allow it to be lifted.

Additionally, an advisory was issued by Washington for the Columbia River shoreline at Cottonwood Beach in Washougal. This advisory is for benthic algae mats, which are often attached to the bottom of waterways in mats, blobs or spires, or detached and floating in clumps. They can occur anywhere in a fast or slow-moving water body, do not affect water clarity, and can feel slimy, gelatinous or slippery.

When in doubt, stay out!
