🚨Holiday PSA for all dog owners:🚨
You may have heard that there has been a rise in canine respiratory disease in Minnesota. Most dogs who contract CIRD (canine infectious respiratory disease) experience mild illness. However, some can experience more severe illness, which can lead to pneumonia or other complications.
The classic sign of CIRDC is a frequent, honking cough that comes on suddenly. This cough has also been described as gagging or retching, and it can involve froth that looks like vomit. Coughing generally worsens with activity or exercise, which can irritate the airways. Even so, not all dogs with CIRDC will have a cough. Other common signs include sneezing, runny nose or eyes, lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, productive cough, and rapid or labored breathing.
To prevent the spread of infection, you can do the following:
* Keep sick dogs home and isolated for 30 days
* Avoid contact with sick dogs and consider leaving pets at home when visiting other households with dogs.
* Ensure all vaccinations are up to date.
* Puppies, seniors, those with underlying health conditions, and brachycephalic breeds can be at a higher risk.
* Practice good hygiene and disinfection.
🐾😷 Please contact your vet asap with any concerns and know that some respiratory testing will be most accurate between the first 2-4 days of symptom onset so don’t wait to make that appointment!

Please remember to keep your pets cool! They need constant access to cool water and shade! Keep them indoors as much as possible, whether it's inside the house or a shade shelter like a garage. If the shelter does not have air conditioning, it needs to have plenty of airflow.
Avoid surfaces like concrete and asphalt, as these heat up faster than the surrounding dirt and grass, and can cause burns to the toe pads. Never leave a dog alone in an enclosed car during hot weather. Puppies, seniors, dogs with short noses (pugs, Boston terriers, English bulldogs, etc.), dogs with long coats (huskies, malamutes, Akitas, etc.), and dogs that are overweight are especially susceptible to complications with the heat.
Be on the lookout for signs of heatstroke. Symptoms can include:
1. Excessive panting.
2. Increased heart rate.
3. Confusion or disorientation.
4. Vomiting or diarrhea.
5. Bright red gums.
6. Body temperature higher than 104° F.
7. Collapse, seizure, or coma.
If you suspect that your dog is experiencing heatstroke, contact a veterinarian immediately! Remember, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them!
