This mare was hospitalized after severe birthing complications. Tonight we applied Nanric Ultimates with a specific mechanical protocal to mitigate laminitis risk/ or severity of laminitis if it's brewing. Once you notice laminitic symptoms the damage has begun. Prayers for a speedy and full recovery!

I am so appalled by this video for so many different reasons!! 😥I'm not sure I even understand why this would be taught in a farrier school now days
This is just shear stupidity to get near a horse like this!!! 20 years ago I remember tying horses legs up to the rafters etc in farrier school. If they would have spent more time investing in having quality horses come into the school to be worked on our shoeing skills would be far better getting out of school.
My farrier career has been cut short due to undo wear and tear and injury by the limiting belief that I needed to work with rough horses to be a "good" farrier.
Secondly this is absolutely not horsemanship!!! There is no emotional fitness this horse is gaining only learned helplessness and career or life ending situation for the farrier. Disclaimer this particular school does have a lot of wonderful attributes. This post is meant to bring awareness not shame.

BALANCE starts with a proper trim and evaluation of the whole horses body!! Pre- trim these hind feet exhibit run under heals, bull nosing and flaring. These distortions are visual indicators of potentially major issues in the horses performance and longterm soundness. What do you think was going on in the front end of the horse that contributed to these distortions???

Here we are looking at a low or negative planter angle (hind foot boney column alignment)
As you can see adding a wedge pad does not solve the issue of low PA if the foot is not prepaired (trimmed) correctly or is over grown. In the training and certifications I have received the foot prep is the 1st and foremost critical aspect. This includes hoof mapping, identifying distortions and what to trim or not to trim. There is no such thing as a "basic trim" in my practice. The trim is the foundation!!
Follow us for deeper insists and explanations of how the low & negative planter angles effect the horses over all performance and long term soundness.

MYTH: Alfalfa is high in sugar.

FACT: According to Equi-Analytical, grass hays, on average, have higher sugar content than alfalfa. However, the only way to truly know the sugar content of any hay is to have it tested. Maturity stage at time of harvest, growing conditions, and plant specie all play a role in the sugar content. Testing hay for sugar is especially important for horses with metabolic conditions and laminitis.

Equine vision is very interesting.
From a distance the vision is blurry/ pixelated.
As they approach something it gets clearer.
Pretty incredible when you think about riding cross country or show jumping. The horse doesn’t really have a clear image of the jump until it’s nearly upon the obstacle.
it also explains why a horse can have something nearby and all of a sudden spook at it when it’s been there for a long time.

Eyes are made up of:

Rods – Responsible for the perception of light (or scotopic vision), the rods allow horses to see in low light or shadows.

Cones – Responsible for controlling photopic vision. (The ability to see under well lit conditions.)
Horses also have two different types of cones that control the colors they can see; short-wavelength (blue), middle wavelength (green).
In humans we also have long wave, which enables us to see red, that horses don’t have.

Monocular
This is where both eyes can be used separately at the same time. Each eye can look in a different direction.
It allows the horse to have a wider field of vision, although it does limit their perception of depth. Due to the position of a horse’s eyes, even with monocular vision, they have two blind spots; one right in front of them and the other directly behind. Monocular vision allows the horse to see any potential threats, regardless of the direction they’re coming from.

Binocular
Similar to how human eyes work, binocular vision allows horses to see directly in front of them with both of their eyes.

Binocular vision allows the horse to judge distances as well as to focus on objects in front of them.

In the case of jumping obstacles, the horse has to be able to switch its vision from monocular to binocular in a matter of seconds.
