We wanted to share important information to keep your pets safe from heartworm and ticks all year:
1. Heartworm cases are trending upward across the U.S.
Heartworm infection rates are seen increasing in traditional hotspot areas and in geographic areas where cases have historically been less prevalent.
2. Multiple factors contribute to heartworm spread
Wildlife, such as coyotes, share mosquito populations with pets and serve as excellent reservoirs for parasites. In addition, dogs are often transported or rehomed from areas of high heartworm incidence to areas of lower incidence. Poor compliance with heartworm disease prevention product administration presents another contributing factor.
3. Ticks are expanding geographically
This is due to numerous factors, including climatic conditions and host populations. This exposes more pets to the blood-sucking parasites.
4. Ticks are present year-round
Many pet owners think ticks are only a problem in the summer months, but ticks can be found actively questing any day the temperature rises above freezing. While pets may not need protection every day, they need protection every month, making year-round protection critical.
