Do you have a small or toy breed dog? Do you ever notice your dog “skipping” a step or doing a little hop? If so, let’s talk about medial luxating patellas, a very common problem in small breed dogs.
🐾 The patella (kneecap) is a part of the stifle (knee) joint. When a pet has patella luxation, the kneecap pops out of place, either towards the inside of the body (medial) or towards the outside of the body (lateral).
🐾 There are 4 grades, depending on the severity of clinical signs and luxation of the patella. This may be diagnosed by your veterinarian on physical examination and radiographs (x-rays) may also help us see the luxation as well as any secondary effects (e.g., arthritis).
🐾 Depending on the grade of luxation and the effect on the patient, weight control, joint supplements, anti-inflammatories/pain medications, surgery, or rehab therapy may be recommended.
🐾 While surgery is typically the best treatment option, if it is not yet necessary or if the pet is not an ideal candidate for surgery, rehab therapy may still be helpful for maintaining range of motion, reducing risk of injury, managing pain, and building strength!
